Poultry Disease,
Fowl Leukosis,
Menaces Flocks
College Station.—Poultrymen
after partial success in com-
j batting coccidiosis and pullorum
by means of management and
feeding developed at experi-
ment stations are faced with
an equally serious hazard to
their flocks from a complex
disease generally known as fowl
leukosis.
L. E. James, assistant poultry
husbandman, Texas Agricultur-
al Experiment Station at A&M
College, says the disease, in-
creasing in Texas and other
states, is possibly more costly
than coccidiosis and pullorum
because it causes deaths in
growing pullets and laying hens.
The causative agent of the dis-
ease is a filterable virus. The
exact transmission methors are
as yet undetermined, James
says. Experiment Station find-
ings indicate the virus may
be transmitted by actual con-
tact with diseased birds or ex-
posure of new stock to con-
taminated premises and inheri-
tance of the susceptibility to
the cauusative agent within
strains.
James advises, among other
methods an eradication, dis-
posal of paralyzed birds as soon
as detected, and sale or dis-
carding of grey-eyed individuals.
In maintaining the flock, he
says, do not replace second
year hens with young stock from
another family strain, because
older birds have a resistance
to disease condition of the liv-
ing premises.
Proper managemei!1
itary measures should
ticed to prevent suitable'
I ease sites, and a complete n?
tion properly balanced and con-
taining the necessary vitamins
should be fed to aid the In-
herited vigor in maintaining &
healthful flock.
