fedrate ranks and a company of
blueunifoomed soliders were sent
to Millican to see that the union
was preserved and the negroes
were treated right. This young
lady lived 4 miles from town and
had often come horse back to
town [alone and it was custom
with all the ladies to travel that
way in coining in she met some
union soldiers and seeing so many
in town she was afraid to return
home alone that evening and be-
ing a visitor to my father house
she asked him if one ef the boys
could go home with her to be
shure of safe arival. And I was
given the pleasant duty. My
father called me and says: John
Miss McGegor is afraid to re-
turn home alone having seen so
manys oldiers. I want you to
put on some clean clothes saddle
the horse and ride home with
her. You must be polite to her
see her saftly home, and you
should always be polite to and
treat ladies with the greatest re-
spect and be ready to protect i ;
them. Remember your mother!
is a lady. Ever after this I have i „
thought when the young man' 1
takes the young lady from a home: *
of safty, he should be certain
she is returned hoiiie unharmed j;
and in safty. It shows good j!
breeding in the young man to1:
protect and respect ladies. In1
my growing up days it was con-
sidered out of order for the young/
man to approach young ladies,
with his shirt sleeves and shirt

them by the arm and say
