lo all ,who will follow in our footsteps. vwe leave to you a legacy of service.
The San Antonio Chapter wvas founded in December of 1960. From this
beginning there was and remains to the present day, a commitment to implement service
activities which promote culture and the arts, young people and scholarship and
contemporary issues which impact the poor, disadvantaged and underserved of this
community.
National directives issued reflect a new vision. Activities were created to meet
the challenges of these mandates. We responded by sponsoring community events and
projects including health, wellness and family preservation for African Americans;
cultural and arts affairs; women's issues----especially those impacting African American
women; preservation of the African American male; education and scholarship; care of
the elderly and substance abuse prevention.
Monetary assistance has been provided to the United Negro College Fund, the
NAACP and three scholarships have been awarded to high school graduates annually
since 1980. The San Antonio Chapter has offered both leadership and support to major
exhibits of African American artists including the Hidden Heritage Exhibit; the Jacob
Lawrence Exhibit and the Evans-Tibbs Exhibit to name a few. Performing artists have
also received our support including the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre; the Harlem Boys'
Choir, Kathleen Battles and Jesse Norman.
Dedication, hard work, commitment and vision continue to be the guiding forces
tfor this group of African American women who are bonded by friendship.July 1996
