Records to Undergo Assault
At leant nine North Texa* Re
lay* records and perhaps more will
be threatened Saturday aa the fifth
annual Invitational track and field
carnival gets under way at Fouts
field.
With a field of 10 col leges a nd
universities and 20 hiirh schools,
possible new university-college
marks may be net in the two-mile
relay, 440-yard relay, 120-yard
high hurdles, shot put, 880-yard
relay, pole vault, discus, sprint
medley relay, and one-mile relay.
Abilene ( hriatian, with its fab-
ulous Bobby Morrow, in a heavy
threat to the present standard* of
41.:. arid 1:26.2 iri the 440- and
KHO-yard relays The Wildcat rpiar-
tet of Wayniond (irigK*, Bill Wood-
house, .fame Se^rest, arid Morrow
have toured the quarter-mile dis-
tance in 40.M this spring, while
Hon (under, Woodhouse, Keg rest,
and Morrow have sped the two-
lap course in 1 :2ii.2. Both times
are top* among the nation's ■ roall
college* so far this spring.
Howard Payne's two-mile four-
some of Allen Tipps, Louie Hayes,
Hon Shephard, and Lvdie Fam-
brough could easily shatter the
mark of 7:69.2. The four half
milei - recorded a 7 12.4 to win the
event at. the Texas relays a week
ago.
The relay standard of HI feet
.?* inches in the pole vault could
tumble, as a three-way battle is
expected in that event UtwtWl
' barley Hall and Hobby McBride
of Southwest Texa < and Weldon
Hill of Howard Payne. Hall and
* ^
TKXAt:
Mc Bride have both •toared I • J *•,
i while Hill has a vault of 13 feet
6V inches already this year.
Billy J'ie Whatley of .Southwest
Texas, holder of the present NT
Belays' shot put record, is back to
defend his 1966 title and it is like-
ly that he will extend the relay
mark of 60 feet 2' inches even
farther.
A top attraction of the meet
will be the apperanrn of Texas
Christian'* Bill ' urtis in ,vie 120-
yard high hurdles. The Horned
Frog ace, who has been clocked
around 14 -econd- flat this spring
over the barriers, n almost a • inch
to shatter the meet mark of I 4.5.
Ken Fannon of A< who pres-
ently ranks seventh among 'he na-
tion's small college hurdlers with
a time of 14.5, is his most likely
competitor in the event.
The di>< j - record of 14H feat
i'i'h inches will probably Is- erased,
a- both Bob Burch of North Texas
and Bay Burrui. of West Texas
State have hurled the disc ovei
the 155-foot mark.

..nl <,f I s i; At the Texa- re-
lays the quartet toured the four
laps in 3:14.7, although finishing
second to AThe Wildcats may-
pa- up the event Saturday and
split their team of fonder, Jack
Shropshire, Segrist, and Paul
(Ginger) Johnson between the
440, WHO, sprint medley, two-mile,
and distance medley relays.
A pair of fait stepping HMO-men,
Johnson of A('(' and Fambrough
of Howard Payne, will afford the
pectatora plenty of speed in the
longer relay event*. Johnsor. with
a time of 1:52.9 and Fambrough
at. 1 53.1 currently rank fifth and
ixth among the nation'* small
olleges in the half-mile event this
spring.
The outstanding high school en-
try is Jimmy Reeves of Weinert,
three-time state schoolboy mile
champ and holder of the high
. hooi NT relays mile of 4:38.2.
Fort Worth's North Side puts
,i perfect relay record on the line
in the 'choolboy field. In the two
years that the high school division
ha < been held in the meet, the
Fort Worth school has swept ev-
er, relay event, which included
three in 1964 and four in 1955.
