Baird Commuting
For KC Opera
I)r. Edward Baird is singing the part
of the Haushoffmeister in Richard
Strauss' "Ariadne Auf Naxos" this sea-
son with the Kansas City Lyric Theater.
Dr. Baird recently sang the title role
in Donizetti's comic opera "Don Pas-
quale" for the group.
Dr. Baird, who sings his last perform-
ance in "Ariadne" Thursday night, com-
mutes to Kansas City. He has sung four
performances of "Pasquale" and three
of "Ariadne."
Regarding Dr. Baird's performance
in "Pasquale," critic John Haskins wrote
in the Kansas City Times, "Edward Baird
in the title role of the miserly old man
who schemed to do his nephew out of
his inheritance by marrying a young
woman played marvelously in character
.... He invested Pasquale with the req-
uisite dignity, while still projecting the
clay feet up to about the neck which the
role suggests. He was droll and put upon,
assuming an elderly braggadocio on cue,
enlisting the sympathy that is the mark
of the best in farcial character, and
through it all he sang well."
