LEI) BY the strong defensive play of
ends Lee Allen and Hob Tucker and
tackle Joe Greene, the Katrle defense
scored 15 points before the offensive
unit could maintain a drive to cross the
Spartan goal line.
The Eagles led 8-0 at halftime on a
interception by cornerback Billy Woods,
who ran 52 yards for a touchdown, and
a safety after a high snap sailed o\er
punter Jesse Wright's head and through
the Spartan end zone.
The Eat;le defense added its last score
in the third quarter when cornerback
Tom Price picked off a Tampa pass at
the Spartan 36-yard-line and returned it
for a touchdown.
THEN THE EAGLE OFFENSE start-
ed moving. Allen fell i.r, a Tampa fum-
ble on the 29-yard line to give the of-
fensive unit its spark. Five plays later
fullback Willie Cherry crashed in from
the one-yard line to give the Eagles a
22-point advantage.
On the ensuing kickoff, Spartan safe-
ty Fred Rranch tried to lateral across
the field to Joe Pirrello. Pirrello couldn't
handle the ball and was swarmed in the
end zone for another safety.
North Texas made it 31-0 late in the
third quarter, starting on the Spartan
33-yard line. After a personal foul penal-
ty and a 17-yard run by quarterback Vi-
dal t'arlin, Glenn Ingram took an eight-
yard pass from C'arlin for the touch-
down.
The Eagles' final points came on a
22-yard field goal by Cherry and a 43-
yard scoring strike from reserve quart-
erback Corkey Poland to flanker Tom
Kitchey with only 40 seconds remaining
in the game,
THE SPARTANS' touchdown came on
an eight-play, 72-yard drive after Cher-
ry's field tfoal had made it 34-0. A three-
yard pass from quarterback Jesse Kaye
to .end Gary Rapp provided the score.
After the game Eagle coach Odus
Mitchell said, "We looked pretty bad in
the first half, especially the offense,
but the defense kept us in the game.
The reason for the poor showing of the
offense was that the Tampa defensive
unit was playing a red-dogging defense
(rushing with the linebackers), and the
offensive linemen were not picking them
up as they came through. But we worked
it out at halftime and the offense start-
ed to move the ball in the second half."
Looking ahead to the Tulsa contest
Saturday night, Coach Mitchell said,
"We going to have to play l>etter ball
in the first half to beat this team. They
have a big defensive team and a big
offensive team. In other words, they are
big all over the place."

The game will pit TCU's three-yards-

tween TCU and Texas A&M freshmen,

club this year than last." Last year
TCU's Polywogs were the undefeated
Southwest Conference champions and
defeated the Eaglets by a 30-6 count.
Although Coach Bahnsen has altered
the attack to provide a more balanced
offense, he says, "We are going to
throw the ball." Doing the groundwork
for the Eaglets will be Jerry Hf.yes, a
halfback from Piano, and Bobby Benton,
a 195-pound fullback from Amarillo. On
occasion, Ronnie Shanklin will be called
on to run from a slot formation in addi-
tion to his normal pass-catching duties.
On the receiving end of Steve Ramsey
