PAGE 5—THE CAMPUS CHAT
New Drivers Licenses
To Get Personalities
The practice of borrowing the driver's
license of a 21-year-old friend for use
as an II) card will soon come to a halt.
Texas driver's licenses issued or re-
newed from now on will carry a color
photograph of the driver and will be
laminated in plastic to prevent counter-
feiting or exchange.
Guinn Simons of the Department of
Public Safety in Denton, said, "A great
number of driver's licenses are borrowed,
stolen or counterfeited by minors to gain
admiuion to clubs and bars." Simons also
stated that the maximum fine for this,
a misdemeanor, is $200. Much of this
will be stopped by having the owner's
picture on the license, Simons predicted.
STUDENTS WILL receive renewal no-
tices at their home address .'10 to 40 days
in advance of the expiration date on their
licenses. The licensing laws passed last
year by the Texas legislature require
that all new applicants, renewals, dupli-
cates and changes of address be handled
in person rather than through the mail.
NTSU students can have their licenses
renewed in Denton.
Under the new procedure, each driver
must take the renewal notice to the near-
est DPS office. There he will take the
standard test, sign the renewal notice
and step in front of the camera. The
picture will be snapped and a receipt
will be issued to enable that person to
drive until he receives his new form,
The film will then be attached to the
renewal notice and sent to the home
office in Austin. It is processed and
laminated in plastic, then mailed back
to its owner in three weeks.
IN AN ATTEMPT to handle the 5,800,.
000 licensed drivers in the state, a new
rotating renewal system has been put
into effect. If a person holds a license
ending in an even number, it will be re-
newed for a four-year term. If the license
ends in an odd number it will be renewed
for a two-year term the first time, then
for four years each time thereafter.
The cost of an operator's license will
be $6 for four years, which is the same
price paid per year now.
Licenses issued to persons under 21
years old will be marked "provisional"
and will he dated to expire on the opera-
tor's 21st birthday, when he will be is-
sued a regular license. Anyone carrying
a provisional license may have it su-
spended or revoked for two convictions
of traffic violations within 12 months.
No one will be allowed to have a pic-
ture taken if his facial characteristics are
hidden by sunglasses, long hair, a hat or
n heavy beard.
THE NEW STATE law also requires
a special examination for a motorcycle
operator's license. Licenses will be mark-
ed with a special stamp authorizing mo-
torcycle usage. Protective headgear is
also required when riding a motorcycle,
with fines going from $10 to $fi0 on con-
viction.
The Department of Public Safety of-
fice in Denton is located in the Court-
house Annex, on East McKinney Street.
Its hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday
through Friday.

Indian Origins Discussed
In Dr. Huddleston's Book
American Indiana could have been de-
scendants of lost Jewish tribes. Or, pos-
sibly they were originally dwellers of the
lost continent of Atlantis.
Both theories- and others are discus-
sed by Dr. I^ee Huddieston of the history
faculty in hia new book, "Origins of the
American Indians, European Concepts
1492-1729."
The book deals with what Europeans
believed, before whites settled the coun-
try, about the origin of American In-
dians.
Ideas about the Indians' origin up till
1792 were mainly theological, Dr Hud-
dieston noted.
He added that the belief that Indians
were Jews sparked missionary activity
by Puritans. They believed that the end
of the world and the coming of Chriat
would not occur until all Jews were con-
verted to Christianity
Because as Christians they had to be-
believe that everyone descended from
Adam and Noah no major secU believed
Indians originated in the Americaa.
Dr. Huddleaton is working on a second
volume, which will trace thought on the
American Indian up to 1870. He hopes to
complete it next year He alao plans a
third volume.
Dr Huddleaton said that he does not
feel that European beliefs about the In-
dians' origin during the period affected
their actions toward the Indians very
much.

North Texas boxers entering the Den-
ton Regional Golden Gloves tournament
will weigh in beginning at 7 p.m. Feb. 15
in the Community Building in the Den-
ton Civic Center.
The tournament, sponsored by the Den-
ton Sports Association, will be held Feb.
16, 17 and 19 at the same location. As-
sociation President Bill Rives said en-
tries could be taken for the tournament
up until weigh-in. "We can sign entrants
at the weigh-in, but it is advisable to
get entries in earlier. All fighters will
have to sign releases, which is a routine
matter, but this does take time. Persons
living outside Denton should get their
applications in about four days early,"
Rives said.
Denton used to be a boxing strong-
hold, but no tournaments have been held
this decade.
THE TOURNAMENT will consist of
elimination bouta in three classes —
novice, Jiigh school and open (experi-
enced). Contestants must be between the
ajfes of 16 and 26.
Rives noted that trophies will be
awarded to the winning boxers in each
class. The top open class boxer will go
to the state Golden Gloves Tournament
in Fort Worth.
"Anyone may enter the novice or high
school classes, regardless of where they
live or how many tournaments they have
been in," Rives said. "But open class box-
ers from other official Golden Gloves
regions must have permission from the
directors of their local Golden Gloves
tournament in order to enter the Denton
meet."
HE ADDED that open class boxer*
from counties not holding tournaments
are eligible, including those from south-
ern Oklahoma.
Entries and inquiries should be mail-
ed to the Denton Sports Association,
Denton Record-Chronicle, P. O. Box 369,

CHECKS — mini and maxim
From a tiny hounds-tooth to a large windowpane, the checks
are in, in force. Bold patterns are very much with us. But the
North Texas student's wardrobe should be balanced with subtle
patterns as well. Clean, classic cut is an important part of the
next direction in slack fashions. The rise is higher man a year
ago. The taper has replaced the flare. Durable press is * big
plus. In fact, almost an essential with college men.
