Eagle Thinclads Fifth
In UTA Track Meet
North Texas State collected 34 points
to piece fifth at the University of lYxas
at Arlington track meet Saturday.
The Baylor Bears, scoring in 15 of 17
events, took first with Hti points. Baylor
was followed by Abilene Christian with
72 points and Oklahoma State with 51 Vfc.
The meet was delayed for two hours
while a helicopter fanned two inches of
early-morninir rain from the track.
Coach Winton E. (Pop) Noah said,
"We did fairly well at the meet. 1 was
really surprised by the performance of
the weight men. We placed in every
field event but the hisrii jump."
CHAD SPEAKS topped the school rec-
ord by an inch with a -18-9 shot throw
but finished only fourth in the meet.
Leaping 45-11, Dave Edwards finished
second in the triple jump. He was follow-
ed by teammate Charles Betts with 46-
Deadline Approaching
For Intramural Softball
Teams wanting to enter intramural
softball have only three more days to
submit rosters.
Intramural director Millard Fisher
said Monday that no teams have en-
tered so far.
The deadline is Friday. Fisher said
entries will be taken until 5 p.m. in
the intramural office, in the Men's Build-
ing.

Butch Walden cleared 15-0 to finish
third in the pole vault. Throwing the
javelin ll 7 feet, one half inch, William
Schmidt pulled down another third.
I>avid Brooks' throw of 155-10 took
fourth in the discus, and William John-
son was fifth with 152-2.
North Texas placed in only two run-
ning events The 440-yard relay team of
Dan Svat*k, Mike Neeley, John Hagler
and Carl Jackson placed third. Jackson
ran a 21.1 to finish second in the 220.
MEANWHILE, in the Featherlight
Relay* at Ranger, Eaglets Dennis Ste-
vens and Roger Rodriguez jet the pace
to bring the NT freshman team into
seventh place.
Stevens ran the half mile in 1:5*5.9.
Rodriguez won the mile in 4:28.1.
Coach Noah will send 22 Eagles to
Oklahoma City Saturday for a meet
with Kansas State Teachers of Pitts-
burg and Oklahoma Christian.
The Eagles have two remaining track
meets in Denton. The Flock will host
the North Texas Relays March 20-30.
On May 2 the Eagles host the Univer-
sity of Texas at Arlington, Howard
l'ayne and Abilene Christian College.
In addition to these two meets, NTSU
will run at meets in Abilene, Austin,
Lafayette, La., Lawrence, Kan., Des
Moines, Cincinnati, Houston and Berke-
ley.

Netters Top UTA 7-0
The North Texas State tennis team
evened its season record at 1-1 Friday
when it defeated the University of Texas
at Arlington, 7-0.
The two toughest matches went into
three sets before being decided.
Letterman Don Wilson won the first
set 6-3 in his singles match with Bill
Saunders but lost the second by ti-8. Wil-
son won easily in the third set, 6-0.
In doubles, Marshall Schubert and Bill
Uncapher beat Richard Prince and Saun-
ders 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Schubert earlier won his singles match
against Saunders 6-8, 7-5 Uncapher de-
feated Britt Malott 6-2, 6-3; Moses Ruiz
downed David Frase 6-2, 6-0, and Dick
DonYarborough
To Visit Denton
Don Yarborough, candidate for the
Democratic nomination in the Texas gov-
ernor's race, will be honored with a cof-
fee at 4 p.m. today in the Community
Room of the First State Bank.
Texas Young Democrats have organiz-
ed their support for the candidate with
the formation of Youth for Yarborough
for Governor groups. Don Bankston,
NT junior and president of the Denton
YD chapter, is the district committee-
man for Yarborough's campaign.
Yarborough's stop in Denton will fol-
low a day-long tour of the North Texas
area.

Although the Eagles have won two
straight Missouri Valley Conference
championships, the Flock is not expected
to be a strong contender for this year's
title. "If we can win three matches I'll
'•e well pleased," Coach Kenneth Rahn-
sen said.
Texas Wins
Golf Tourney;
NTSU Third
North Texas look third place behind
Texas and national champion team I'ni-
versity of Houston at the Border Olymp-
ics Golf Tournament Saturday.
Texas fired a 12-under-par 1,104 to
win. Houston, seeking its seventh straight
title at the Laredo match, < ame in sec-
ond with a score of 1,177.
The Fables' four players scored 1,1(13
for the 72-hole tourney.
COACH HERH FKKKILL was not .lis
heartened by the loss. "A few "f the
boys are somewhat inexperienced as far
as varsity play is concerned, but we're
optimistic about the team and the sea-
son as a whole," he said. "Texas is al-
ways hard to beat, and, as usual, Hous-
ton has produced a very fine team."
Hank Sterling, a senior from Mexico
City, shot 287 to lead the Eagles in in-
dividual scoring. Team captain Jimmy
Clayton was second with 295.
WARREN LCEHCKE, a senior from
Mount Prospect, III., shot 302 and Jerry
Greiner, senior from Seguin, fired a 309.
Rik Massengale of Texas was tourna-
ment medalist with a score of 283,
Tuesday's Dallas match with OU and
SMC was canceled by bad weather. The
Katdes have three remaining matches in
Denton. They meet SMU April 1, Mis-
souri April 2 and Bradley April 8.
The Eagles will also participate in
tournaments in Oklahoma, Ohio and New
Mexico. North Texas will travel to Nor-
man, Okie., March 21 for a tournament
with OU. The Eagles will be at the Ohio
intercollegiate meet in Thannee, Ohio,
April 5-fi. The Flock will travel to Cin-
cinnati May 9-10 for the Missouri Valley
Conference meet. North Texas will go to
the NCAA meet May 17-22 in I.as Cru-
ces, N.M.
