New Theater: It's 'Heaven
Nude with Violin' To Open Facility
Hy ROBERT SPANGLER
Chat Staff Writer
William A. Snare, a new member of
the speech and drama staff, thinks he's
in heaven at least when he looks at the
new University Theater,
"Ninety per cent of the people in
the theater business would consider this
heaven," he said. "I have l>een in many
theaters in my time and this one rates
among the be-st."
The University Theater, in the new
Speech and Drama Building, will get
its first public exposure Auk. 20 and £l
with the performance of Noel Coward's
humorous-but-sophisticated "Nude With
Violin," directed by Dr. Stanley K*.
Hamilton. Tickets go on sale in the new
building Tuesday for $1 each.
ONE OF THE THINGS that Snare
likes about the theater is the continental
seating (stair-stepped, curved rows) that
make the back row closer to the front
than the type of seating in the present
Auditorium Building and the old Studio
Theater. The theater seats 500.
Terry Taylor, who plays Colin in the
production, said that the new theater
doesn't have a balcony to ruin the
acoustics and the actors don't have to
shout to be heard on the back row.
Taylor also said that the lighting was
much better than the previous lighting
in the Studio Theater and the Auditorium
Building. The stage is also larger than
those available in the past.
THE SET DESIGN was under the
direction of Snare and Dr. E. Robert
Black. "Snare will work with Dr. Black
until he learns the ropes, at which time
he will take over as the technical director
of productions with the official title of
design-technician of the theater divi-
sion," said Dr. R. V. Holland, director
of the speech and drama department.
The new University Theater is
equipped with a set deeign room next to
the stage and very high ceilings so that
the sets can Ivo built and moved from the
design room to the stage with no diffi-
culty. Under the old method, sets were
built in the rock buildings on Highland
Street and transported to the Historical

Huilding or to the Auditorium Building,
and they had to be small enough to go
through • regular door. This often made
it necessary to build the sets in small
pieces. The n« w building makes it pos-
sible to build the sets at the stage and
in one piece.
THE NEW BUILDING contains, on
the ground level, the traditional Green
Room for actors and actresses not in
stage. This one has a complete kitchen.
When a scene calls for it, food either
hot or cold can be prepared in this
kitchen.
The theater is wood paneled inside
and out, and the lighting on performance
nights illuminates the entire theater
from the outside and gives it a profes-
sional look, Snare said.
The coming play also has a profes-
sional look, Snare said, and it promises
to be a winner. But, he said, just a
walk through the building is worth the
price of admission.
