Eagles Squeak by Tulsa
In 20-17 MVC Thriller
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane blew and
hlew but juat couldn't budge the "Mean
Cireen" Kagles and came up four yard*
abort of a victory.
North Texas stopped Tulsa at the
four-yard line on the final play of the
Kamc to win 20-17 in the Missouri Val-
ley Conference football pipi« played ut
Tulsa's Skelly Stadium Saturday.
The Tulsa drive for victory began on
the Eagle 29-yard line with 1:37 left
to play. The Hurricane moved down the
field quickly with short passe*, and
with only two seconds remaining the
Hurricane lined up in field goal position.
TULSA QUAKTKRBACK Mike Stripl-
ing, the holder, took the snap from cen-
ter, jumped to his feet and finpd a pjiss
to tailback Vic Prather at the 10. He
made it to the four, when his run and
the game ended in the arms of Ret Lit-
tle, Charles Beatty and Perry Pruett. •
Coach Rod Rust said Monday he be-
lieves the game was the Katies' best
team effort of the season, marred only
by the individual breakdowns of a couple
of players.
"We played in a winning manner, and
what we had to do, we did," he said
THE EAGLKS dominated the scoring
in the first three quarters but did not
control the ball as well as Tulsa, which
led in every statistic.
N'TSU nad the ball inside the Tulsa
30-yard line si* times without scoring.
North Texas lost the hall there twice
on fumbles and once on a blocked field
goal. Two field goals were missed and
once the ball went over on downs.
North Texas' scoring in the first half
came on two field goals by Mike Gattis
and on a 62-yard return of a pass inter-
ception by linebacker James Ivy. In the
second half the Eagles scored on a 53-
yard pass play from Steve Ramsey to
Ronnie Shanklin, reminding people of
their 19(57 form when they were the na
tion's leading touchdown passer and re-
ceiver.
THE HURRICANE SCORED only
once in the first half -on a 27-yard field
goal. In the fourth quarter the Hurri-
cane picked up momentum and drove
quickly for touchdowns on a 13-yard run
and a four-yard pass.
Ramsey ended the day with 12 of 30
passes for 189 yards. The Eagles' lead-
in* rusher was Leo Taylor, who ran
for 88 yards on 26 carries. Leading re-
ceivers were Shanklin, who caught four
passes for 26 yards and one touchdown,
and Barry M >re, who caught four pass-
es for 51 yards.

The North Texas State tennis team
placed second at the Oral Roberta Uni-
versity tournament in Tulsa last week-
end to open the 1968-69 season. The Ea
gles won without getting any player in
the finals.
Coach Kenneth Bahnsen said Monday-
he was pleased with the team's over-all
performance. He said the freshman-laden
.earn gained valuable experience.
"Top players from around the coun-
try were entered in the tournament, and
;his keen competition should improve
the performance of our team in the fu-
ture," Bahnsen said. This will be the
team's only fall competition.
Bahnsen entered eight players in sin-
gles play and four teams in doubles
competition. Danny Haddox, George
Pappas and Marshal) Schubert each had
first round victories for the Eagles.
Pappas defeated last year's runnerup
in Missouri Valley Conference singles,
Peter I^abar, and then was defeated by
