904-C Ft. Hood St.
1104 W. Hwy. 190
By RUDY JUAREZ
What started out as a shopping and sightsee-
ing trip into the flourishing city of Reynosa
Mexico 380 miles south of Ft. Hood turned into
an unofficial friendly visit to a nearby Mexican
Army Post for my friend Albin Acosta and I.
The guard at the gate greeted us with a smile.
However when we explained to him that we
were American soldiers and wished to tour the
Campo Militar (Military Camp) in an unofficial
capacity the smile faded from his face. He was
hesitant for a moment and then asked us polite-
ly to wait a few minutes.
Just then a group of officers drove up in a
POV and the guard explained to them the
nature of our visit. The officers told the guard
to let us in and have us wait for an official
escort.
We talked to one of the guards while we wait-
ed. We soon found out that the Mexican Army is
not much different than the American Army.
The young soldier told us that they may sign
enlistment contracts of three or more years and
may reenlist much as we do in the U.S. Army.
They receive a bi-weekly wage but he did not
disclose the amount of wages received.
The guard whom we imagined to be in a rank
equivalent to our private first class told us he
had just returned from a school in Central Mex-
ico where he took college courses to advance
his education. Later we learned from an officer
that every Mexican soldier must go to college
to obtain a degree.
Discipline we found is not overlooked in the
Mexican Army and is in fact stricter than
what is expected of an American soldier. Mex-
ican soldiers stand inspections three times a
day and follow the same courtesies for officers
that we follow in the U.S. Army.
We also found out from the guard that this
post is a post for the cavalry and surprisingly
enough the mounted cavalryman is still much
apart of the Mexican Army. The training un-
dertaken by the Mexican Cav includes small
arms training self-defense and mounted train-
ing. Out on an open field we could see obstacles
of various heights and sizes to be mastered by
the cavalryman.
While we talked to the guard a young soldier
emerged from one of the several barracks and
began playing a tune on a shiney trumpet. The
guard explained to us that it was prisoner call.
Those who are placed in prison are required to
pull details. “That is to let them know that it’s
time to come back in” the guard said.
A few minutes later an older soldier wearing
what to us looked like second lieutenant bars
appeared and said he would escort us in. We
drove down a road past several barracks with
open doors through which we could see neatly
arranged bunks. Painted above the doorway

Sightseeing trip becomes
tour of Mexican cavalry
Thursday. N ovem ber 6 1975
were the words “Segundo Escuadron” (Second
Squadron).
When we arrived at the “Commandancia”
(Headquarters) we noticed a table set under a
clump of trees outside and several officers and
their wives gathered around it. On a smaller ta-
ble several soldiers were mixing drinks and
placing them on the officer’s table. Gose by a
large fire glowed under a cauldron while one
of the cooks watched over it.
An officer wearing the single golden bar and
neatly pressed dress greens received us with a
handshake and a smile. He then introduced us
to an officer wearing three golden bars which
we later found out were captain’s bars. He in
turn introduced us to a major a lieutenant col-
onel and a colonel. We were then introduced to
various lieutenants and captains.
We were told that the event was an officers’
party and that we were welcome to stay. Before
we could mutter ayes or no two mixed drinks
were set on the table for us. We chatted with an
officer wearing two golden bars who was very
familiar with the U.S. Army. He had been at Ft.
Sam Houston before pistol competitions and at
Ft. Bragg for training with the Green Berets.
From him we found out that all officers in the
Mexican Army pay for their own uniforms. The
officer normally buys the material and then has
a tailor sew the uniform for him. One thing
that struck us very impressive were the knee-
high leather booths which were apart of every
soldier’s uniform. Every soldier we were told
must buy his own boots which cost over $100.
As a community relations measure the small
fort which is a closed facility opens its doors to
the civilian population every weekend. Young
civilian boys may use the fort’s baseball and
soccer fields. For the more venturesome the
post can arrange a horse ride through the obsta-
cle course.

As we drove out the gates after an exciting af-
ternoon with the Mexican Army we noticed a
group of about 20 civilian boys going through
the gates. Many carried baseball bats and
gloves with them. We waved goodby to our
friend the guard as we carried away a fine im-
pression of the Mexican Cav.
