CLGP on target
A 155mm cannon-launched guide projectile
(CLG P) passed ajo developmental
milestone in a recent demonstration at White
Sands Missile Range.
A CLGP hit a target tank 8 kilometers away
while being directed to the mark by a laser
beam from a small remotely piloted vehicle
(RPV). It was the first attempt to use a remote
controlled airborne designator to provide the
laser spot on which the guided projectile
homes.
CLGP is a cannon shell that homes in on a
target that has been illuminated by a laser de-
signator. The designator is a device that pro-
jects a laser beam onto a target.
In the demonstration the RPV flew at 1500
feet at a speed of 50 knots and located the
target M-48 tank with its TV camera. Techni-
cians monitoring the aircraft at a ground sta-
tion 4 kilometers away projected the RVP’s
laser beam on the target and then signaled the
artillery to fire.
Army officials say a successful RVP system
would increase significantly the effectiveness
of the guided artillery round. It would also re-
duce the risk to a forward observer team by
permitting them to designate targets for the
CLGP from positions behind the front lines.

The Commanding General’s Family Housing
Area Advisory Council met for the second time
last Thursday to review progress in solving pro-
blems raised at the first meeting held July 28
and to introduce and discuss difficulties that
have arisen since that time.
The Housing Council is the brainchild of LTG
Robert M. Shoemaker III Corps and Ft. Hood
commander. It was conceived as a means to
provide two-way communication between hous-
ing residents and staff agencies responsible for
support of on-post living areas. It was hoped
that such an interchange would alert manage-
ment to resident problems that they might not
otherwise be aware of and also to give occu-
pants an opportunity to see how complaints are
handled and to understand some of the dif

ficulties which plague the start of any large
projects.
More details on the meeting itself will be in a
future issue of the SENTINEL. One thing that
was brought up however was the fact that many
people do not know who their council represen-
tatives are or how to get in touch with them.
For your information the SENTINEL has pro-
vided the list below. For those individuals who
have area coordinators they are your first stop
if you have a problem that you feel needs to be
brought to the council’s attention. All housing
residents are encouraged to contact council
embers when any difficulty or misun-
derstanding arises especially between housing
office officials and dependents.
