A “Beware of Pet’ sign hangs near “C” Co.
2nd Bn. 67th Armor 2nd Armd. Division’s
motor pool where their pet resides among the
tanks and jeeps out back.
The pet is old but still faithful to its owners.
When looking at it the beast is hard to describe.
Its coat is a mixture of soft earthy tones. Its
height and weight is average for the species
about eight feet tall and weighs 56 tons. The
pet’s nickname is “Monster” but it is really
called a recovery vehicle also known as a VTR
or M-88.
The men of “C” Co. assured me that this was
no ordinary VTR. “It has been very special to
us and we think of it as our “motorpool pet”
explained SFC Richard Felt the motor
sergeant. “It has along list of credentials to
credit its adoption by the men.”
“We believe it is one of the oldest running
VTR’s in existence. Many times it has been the
only VTR in running condition throughout the
battalion” he said.
“What is extremely impressive about out pet
is its stamina. Normally a VTR will be turned
in to be rebuilt at 5000 miles. This one has over
7000 miles and is still purring like a kitten. I’ve
never witnessed this before” marveled the
motor sergeant.
“The men contribute excellent daily care of
their pet to its longevity. Preventive main-
tenance has kept it going when others fail”
stated Felt. “The crew knows their machine
and respect it the machine reflects this care.
The “monster” as the men so fondly call it
goes out on every field problem. Everything
works on it and they carry an impact wrench
and auxiliary generator along with it for re-
pairs.

is we don’t let it quit. If something goes wrong
with it in the field instead of asking to be towed
in we repair it on the spot and go on with our
mission” added Felt.
The VTR’s job is to rescue and reciver dis-
abled tanks and comparable sized equipment
on the battlefield. It mounts a 50. caliber
machinegun for defense.
The “Monster” has been chosen for display
over many of its newer contemporaries
because of its excellent up-keep.
The VTR is becoming well known and highly
regarded in motorpool all over the division. ‘As
far as the Army Manual Maintenance Service is
concerned “C” Co. 2/67th motor pool is the
best in the battalion and as good as any in the
division. The running time of the vehicle is an
indication of what proper preventive main-
tenance can do to keep a vehicle going” stated
SFC Richard Nolan.
The operators and crew assigned to the VTR
expressed varied feelings for their vehicle.
“We all pitched in and worked on it its
our baby! exclaimed SP4 John Landis.
“One thing is certain I have confidence in
our “Monster”. I never worry about it breaking
down halfway back from the field” insisted
PFC Allan Bennett.
“Our vehicle runs so good we have time to
help fix other things. I especially enjoyed re-
trieving a jeep from Cowhouse Creek one
time” informedSP5 Allen Landry.
“The soldiers in this motor pool are the
best” Felt said. ‘The men working on our
“Monster” is the reason we can be so proud of
it.”
“The time I enjoyed out pet the most is when
OUR “Monster” had to tow in the battalion’s
VTR after afield problem” concluded Felt.
