Unfortunately “bad things” do not
only happen to the deserving adult.
Sometimes the young child can be
the victim of a crime.
This is why parents should teach
their children basic common-sense
precautions and work with school
officials and the Parent-Teacher
Organization (PTO) to initiate crime
prevention strategies in and around
area schools.
Outlined below is a list of basic fun-
dam mental precautions for young
children as recommended by the III
Corps and Fort Hood Crime Preven-
tion Section.
Know the length of time it takes
your child to walk to and from
school. Immediately check any delay
in arrival home. Also know the safest
routp to the school and instruct your
child to follow the route. If you chil-
dren leave for school or arrive home
after dark arrange to meet them at
some point along the way.
Know your child’s playmates
and where they congregate. Visit the

Organization Day slated for Friday
Oct. 20.
Activities are set to kick off at ab-
out 9 a.m. with everything from cards
and volleyball to three-legged racces
chess and a 5000-meter run.
One of the day’s highlights should
be a softball game which will feature
a fierce battle between the GS-15-6’s
and the TCATA women.
If that strenuous spectating gets
you set for some avid participation

fore it becomes a serious problem
Give the school instructions to re-
lease your child only to persons you
have designated in writing.
—Tell your children never to admit
being home alone either on the
phone or to someone at the door. Be
sure your babysitter is a responsible
person and capable of acting in an
emergency.
Give your child a healthy suspi-
cion of strangers. A stranger should
be defined as anyone a child’s pa-
rents don’t know even if the person
knows a child’s name or “seems like a
friend.”
Children should never accept
food or an automobile ride from a
stranger and should never be allowed
to play near public restrooms.
Teach your children to never
open doors to a stranger and to never
enter a stranger’s home. If your child

about the dunking booth where
you’ll get the chance to see some of
your favorite TCATA personalities

is your duty to report any incident to
the MPs as soon as possible.
Children should be encouraged
to talk to their parents if they ever
have a problem not only with a stran-
