Street scene:
Sp5 George Godfrey 1st Cav. Div.:
“If you can handle both jobs then it’s
all right. But if it means compromis-
ing your ability to handle your milit-
ary job then you’re hurting yourself.
If you’re hurting yourself then you
hurt the Army too. And in that case
it’s just not worth it.”

unior soldier of the quarter Lewis
like Turman admitted surprise at
winning the post-wide competition.
But Lewis personally requested a
chance to compete in the quarter
boards. He approached his section
sergeant first sergeant and gained
final approval from his sergeant
major.
Then as in Turman’s case he com-
peted in battalion brigade and divi-
sion boards before reaching post
level. He feels his success in these
boards was due to a lot of studying.
“My wife helped a lot as did the first
sergeant.”
In addition he learned a lot from
his present job. While primarily a
combat engineer Lewis is now work-
ing out of his MOS processing all E-5
and E-6 promotions within the bri-
gade. Because of this job he is re-
quired to sit on all promotion boards.

“I get a lot of practice just listening to
the boards” he said.
Lewis is fresh in both appearance
and attitude and joined the Army in
March of 1981 because he thought it
was the right thing to do. And he still
feels this is so. “The thing I’ve gotten
out of it is more self-discipline. That’s
the number one thing which I value
very much.”
Lewis completed basic training
and AIT at Fort Leonard Wood Mol
and was first assigned to Fort Camp-
bell Ky. where he remained for
three months until he received a
stateside swap to Fort Hood in Sep-
tember of 1981.
He has completed six hours to-
wards an associate’s in business
management at Central Texas Col-
lege but looks forward to the dayj
when he can complete his long-rangfe
dream of earning his doctorate in
anthropology.
For Lewis with a family and ah
Army career such a goal is still some
time off.
