New sticker
prevents
air sickness
Fort Hood troops will no longer be
issued motion sickness pills while
participating in mobilization exer-
cises.
Instead they will be issued medi-
cated stickers that are placed directly
on the skin behind the ear. These
stickers will do the same job pills
have done in the past except the
medication will be absorbed through
the skin.
The new product Transderm ™-V
is the size of a dime and flesh colored.
“We see this change as a big step
forward” said Col. William W. Bur-
gin Jr. commander of Darnall Army
Community Hospital.
“In the past” Burgin said “we
have given troops oral medication to
prevent motion sickness. However
some of the troops would get sick be-
fore the medication had time to start
working and they would lose the pill
through vomiting.
“A large percentage of troops” he
continued “are subject to motion
sickness and on along flight could
become dehydrated by the time they
reach their destination. It’s impor-
tant that our troops be fit when they
arrive and with Transderm ™-V we
shquld have better results.
“During MOBEX 82” Burgin said
“it becam apparent we needed a
more effective motion sickness pre-
ventative than the pills. At that time
Transderm ™-V was being used in the
civilian communities and we decided
to adopt it for the military. It is now
'available in our pharmacies and is
being issued to those who need mo-
tion sickness protection.”

The Fort Hood Community Blood
Bank Center has joined forces with
President Ronald Reagan and Bob
Hope in observing January as Na-
tio a lute lood onor
Month.
As a means of emphasizing the
need for blood uring January
which is often a time of severe blood
shortages the American Association
of Blood Banks first instituted the
olunteer Blood Donor Month in
1971.
Since that time the program has
been an annual event with the pres-
idential declaration and anew theme
each year. This year’s theme is “Ev-
ery Tomorrow Needs Blood Donors
Today. Give Blood.”
“We have approximately 13000
donors per year at Fort Hood” said
Maj. Bobby F. Chaney technical di-
rector of the Blood Bank Center.
“Out of those donations it takes
approximately 20 pints of blood per
day to su ppo rt the needs in our
MEDDAC.
“In order to get the quotas of blood
we need we have regularly sche-
duled donation days for each unit on
post. As an incentive for participa-
tion in this program awards (pla-
ques) are given each month to the
units with the largest percentage of
participation. Awards are given to a
division brigade and a support unit.
Each unit’s monthly goal is approxi-
mately two percent of its assigned
ments. CHAMPUS officials note that
when a claim is returned because of
signature problems as many as 30-60
days may be added to the processing
time. Most claims are otherwise pro-
cessed within 21 days of submission.
In addition to speeding up claims
processing the change is expected to
save up to $150000 annually in admi-
nistrative costs from claims returned
ecau se of sig atu re problem s.

strength” Chaney said.
“Each month” Chaney explained
“the plaque is engraved with the
names of the winners in each categ-
ory. The plaque is then displayed in
the donor center refreshment area
during the following month.
“At the end of the year the plaques
will be permanently retired to the un-
its in each category that have Won the
trophy the most number of months
during the year. In case of a tie the
unit with the greatest overall percen-
tage would win for the year. The win-
ners for 1982 were 2nd Armd Div 6th
Cav Bde and MEDDAC.”
Chaney also pointed out TBBC not
only supports the Fort Hood MED-
DAC but has an area of responsibility
for military facilities west of the Mis-
sissippi. Fort Knox has a similar re-
sponsibility for areas east of the Mis-
sissippi.

order to meet the constantly increas-
ing need as new lifesaving surgical
techniques are perfected.
Because human blood cannot be
manufactured and animal blood can-
not replace it people are the only
source of blood for those who need it.
And because blood is perishable and
can be stored for only a short period
of time donating blood regularly is
the only way to guarantee availability
when needed.
“Each unit on post” Chaney said
“has a regularly scheduled time each
month to donate blood. Those sche-
duled for the rem aind er of this
month are DENTAC and 89th MP
Jan. 24 TCATA and MEDDAC Jan.
25 3rd Sig Bde Jan. 26 6th Cav Jan.
27-28 and 1st Cav Jan. 31. Other
groups not listed will be scheduled in
February as usual.”

ter of discipline. If you think about
energy conservation every day the
actions will become automatic.
