weight.
“THERE IS substantial evi-
den ce that overweight and
underweight people die before
individuals who maintain a me-
dian body weight. Using AR
600-9 tables a soldier can deter-
mine his ideal body weight by
finding the weight in between
the minimum and maximum
allotted” Emerson said.
Emerson explained that the
only way a person can reduce
his weight and keep it off is to
change his eating habits. Por-
tion control and reduction of
excess fats and sugars are im-
portant.
Avoid excess fat and satu-
rated fats.
“Americans eat far too much
fat. It is high in calories and
contributes to the development
of many diseases” Emerson
said.
Eat foods with adequate
starch and fiber.
These foods are important for
the digestive process.
Avoid too much sugar.
Over-use of sugar causes a
host of health-related problems
in addition to adding many
empty calories to the diet.
Reduce use of salt.
SALT HAS been identified as
a major contributor to many ail-
ments.
Drink alcohol in modera-
tion.
Excesses of alcohol can cause
severe organ damage.
According to Emerson the
Army is moving ahead with
changes in the aster menu
used by military dining facili-
ties. “As of April 1 the amount
of fats and salt will be reduced.
The master recipes are being re-
vised. A dditionally we are
promoting the use of alterna-
tive breakfast foods such as
yogurt and fresh fruits” he
said.
