one of the two attack helicop-
ters.
Unfortunately the battalion
lost one of its own helicopters
and the four soldiers aboard it.

Umphenour said. “I was also
the A laska State Cham pion
with the .45 cal. pistol.”

During the week-long exer-
cise the Chinooks were also
called upon to supply the 4th
Squadron 9th Cavalry with
fuel during their Army Train-
ing Evaluation Program.
According to PFC Richard
Wagner medium helicopter re-
pairman morale remained high
among the troops during the
field problem. “It was a good
exercise” Wagner said. “It was
a change of pace and most of all
we learned a lot.”
“I believe a soldiers should
be able to use their weapon to
the best maxim um effective
range” Umphenour said.
Umphenour who joined the
Army and entered Infantry
Officer’s Candidate School in
1965 after having served in the
Marine Corps for four previous
years has been shooting all his
life. In addition to his state
ark sm an ship aw ards he
served as the Officer-In-Charge
for the XVIII Airborne Corps
and Fort Bragg Rifle and Pistol
Team in 1969.
