They’re probably the most seen and least rec-
ognizable soldiers in the First Team. They’re
mistaken as being part of the Horse Platoon and
members of the division band.
“WE HATE THAT” said Sgt. Ricky A. Lyons
NCOIC of the 1st Cavalry Division Color Guard.
The Color Guard part of the division’s com-
mandant shop is seen in retirement cere-
monies change of commands dining-ins para-
des and many other formal occasions.
“During ceremonies on Cooper Field we rep-
resent the division” said Sp4 Michael T. Cook
whose been with the Color Guard for a year.
“And when we’re in parades we represent the
Army.”
It’s a lot of responsibility for the seven men in
the elite unit. During the cermonies they are the
center of attention. All eyes are focused on
them.
“I ENJOY IT” said Sgt. Bruce J. Schmitz the.
only one of the seven who served as a Color
Guard somewhere else. For two years he was a
member of the United Nations Honor Colors in
Korea. “It’s a challenge.”
However Schmitz admited “It’s a. rush get-
ting out there in front of all those people.”
The other members of the Color Guard have
similar feelings. “It’s really wild” said Sp4 Per-
ry Newell. “I feel really proud to be out there...
it makes me feel good ^bout myself.”
Sp4 Charles A. Sytek agreed saying “It’s a

great honor. It’s one of the best duties in the
division.”
BECAUSE THEY ARE so visible and repre-
sent the First Team the members of the Color
Guard are very aware of their appearances. “We
have to keep our standards high” said Sp4
Eugene Putman. “With all the ceremonies we
do people look at us a lot more than other sol-
diers. We have to look sharp and do a good job-”
Schmitz sees the Color Guard’s job as being
very important. “The Cav wouldn’t be as close-
knit” he said. “We help make the division sol-
diers more enthusiastic about the Cav and help
inform them about its heritage.”
The Color Guard performs at least a couple
times every week. Yet despite all their work
the men rarely get as much as a thanks. “They
really don’t get recognized the way they
should” said Lyons.
Another problem the soldiers face is since
they all are from different units on post and
assigned to HHC 1st Cavalry Division many
are forgotten by their home unit.
“It seems like the only time their units even
look them up is when they’re needed for some-
thing” Lyons added. “Promotions are especial-
ly hard because of that.”
However even with the problems the soldiers
have because of what they’ve chosen to do they
wouldn’t have missed the chance to serve in the
Color Guard. As Cook explained “It feels good
especially when they’re playing the National
Anthem. All eyes are on us ... on the flag.”
