What’s in a moveout? Just
heading right on down to the
airfield hopping on the air-
plane and it’s up up and away
right?
MEMBERS OF the 3rd Sig-
nal Brigade experienced again
O ct. 1 ju how easy a
movement is as they completed
another deployment this time
to Florida to participate in the
Joint Readiness Exercise Bold
Eagle.
Actually the 3rd Bde soldiers
knew it wasn’t a “piece of cake”
long before their departure. In
fact the deployment was the
culmination of months of inten-
sive planning at every level.
First there was the “mission”
tasking from higher headquar-
ters. Then for the brigade S-3 it
was off and running to collect
coordinate and disseminate the
various requirements or ac-
tions necessary to complete the
mission. Once the actual re-
quirements were clarified it
was a simple matter of pulling it
all together.
SIMPLE? Don’t you believe
it. “Pulling it together” re-
quires in-depth planning and
coordination by the entire bri-
gade.
It seems like a ton of paper-
work is prepared for a major ex-
ercise and it was no different
for Bold Eagle. Operations pro-
cedures personnel strength re-
ports supply actions security
checks equipment operability
reports rail and air transport
orders are just some of the areas
that tie in together to ensure
that the 3rd Sig Bde can pro-
vide continuous effective com-
munications to its subscribers.
The task in are ade
equipment and personnel re-
quirements are set supplies are
ordered so now it’s time to kick
back and wait for the big day.

NO NO this is where the ball
really gets rolling—it’s time for
equipment checks and mainte-
nance unit and individual
training and to make sure the
loose ends are tied. This con-
tinues right on up until the day
the equipment and soldiers
move out.
As the big day approaches
lots of little things have to be
done just to get on the road so
to speak. A week or so out vehi-
cles and equipment going by*
rail have to be staged at the rail-
head and after a few days it’s
all loaded and shipped. Of
course while all that equip-
ment is at the railhead it has to
be guarded.
Next comes the air loading.
Several days before takeoff
personal baggage has to be
loaded on pallets so it’s down to
the motor pool bags and bag-
gage give it to the air-loading
team and resto ’re
through with the “preliminar-
ies” and waiting for your big
bird. Unless of course you’ve
been assigned as one of the
guards or on the air-loading
team.
FINALLY the big day arrives
and you report at zero-dark-
thirty to the assembly point.
The manifest is prepared
you’re trucked to the airfield
and then it’s on the plane and
on to sunny Florida and Bold
Eagle.
Does it end there? Not on
your life! Following the exer-
cise the “recovery” phase be-
gins. Although much of the re-
deployment planning has been
done there’s still the matter of
getting your equipment and
yourself back on the railcars or
airplane for the return trip.
This of course can be accom-
plished only after the other ex-
ercise “players” have departed.
