SEOUL South Korea South Korea sank a North Ko-
rean spy vessel after a three-hour chase and an exchange of
gunfire the Defense Ministry said. The North Korean vessel
was sighted 10 miles off the coast of the southeastern city of
Pusan a ministry statement said. The ministry said there were
no South Korean casualties but did not mention whether any
North Koreans were killed or captured. The North Korean
vessel reportedly ignored a request to stop and the South
Korean air force and navy pursued it three hours before sink-
ing it the military report said. No official information was
issued about the North Korean nessel but the Yonhap News
Agency quoted unidentified sources as saying it would have
had six crew members. The sinking marked the first of its kind
since South Korea sank a North Korean vessel and captured
two crewmen in December 1983 a U.S. official said.
TOKYO More than 2000 people protesting the expan-
sion of Tokyo’s international airport battled police with fire-
bombs stones and steel pipes Oct. 20. Officials said 53 police-
men were injured and 239 demonstrators arrested. Akihiro
Adachi a spokesman for the Chiba prefectural police said
2200 demonstrators clashed with 9500 riot police near the New
Tokyo International Airport at Narita 40 miles northeast of
Tokyo. He said he did not know how many protesters were
injured. There were no reports of travelers being hurt.
MEXICO CITY —Three earth tremors ranging from mild
to moderately strong shook the quake-battered Mexican capit-
al during the weekend but police and relief agencies said they
had no reports of major damage or injuries. The Tacubaya
seismological observatory said Oct. 20 that the quakes mea-
sured 3.5 3.2 and 4.3 on the Richter scale. A quake that mea-
sures 4 is capable of causing moderate damage.
