It looked like shades of the
past when medical doctors
under the Nazi Reich measured
the heads of children to deter-
mine degrees of intelligence.
HOWEVER the purpose of
measuring heads in the 6th
Cavalry Brigade (Air Combat)
is not for determining intelli-
gence.
“We are measuring heads of
aviators to make sure that head
sizes are compatible with de-
sign specifications of the new

we’re trying to verify its utility

Aviators get opportunity to ride M-l
Aviators measured for new Apache helmet
ACCORDING TO Sippo this
measurement is only for pilots
getting ready to attend the
Apache pilots’ school. “Even-
tually we’ll do this Armywide
in order to find ten tial
Apache pilots” he said.
Sippo said that in November
he will go to U.S. Army Europe
to take head measurements of
helicopter pilots. “But now we
are collecting data to make sure
the Apache helmet will fit ev-
erybody.”
According to Army aviator
and Asst. S-3 7th Sqdn 17th
Cav Capt. Tom Gaetjen the
Apache helmet is constructed

Aviators and Staff riding in
tanks?
NORMALLY THE MIS-
SION is to kill tanks” said
Capt. Wayne Randolph com-
ander eadquarters and
Headquarters Troop 6th Caval-
ry Brigade (Air Combat). “But
we couldn’t pass up an oppor-
tunity to ride in and explore an
M-l tank.”
As part of the monthly Offic-
ers’ Professional Development
classes Randolph is responsi-
ble to conduct briefings to
orient HHT officers in diversi-
fied subjects pertaining to the
Army.
In light of Randolph’s intent
the September class dealt with
two subjects: leadership and
the function and capabilities of
the M-l tank.
“Col. Mike Malone made a
tape at Fort Hood some months
ago on leadership” Randolph
tech “innards”.
“THE HELMET consists of
an outer shell inner liner and
styrofoam insert and is de-
signed to provide crash protec-
tion eliminate noise and pro-
vide mounting for the visor and
cover and two pairs of infrared
detectors” Gaetjen said. “The
helmet must be fitted for the
field of view element the line of
sight and the revolving turret
system unique to this type of
helmet. But most importantly
the helmet is fitted for crash
protection” Gaetjen said.
According to Gaetjen when
the helmet is properly fitted
the head feels like it is actually

ACCORDING TO to the
videotape Malone is now work-
ing for a retired Navy chief pet-
ty officer in the Florida fishing
industry. Malone said that he
was experiencing being the
“low man” in the business but
was a product of the “power-
down” system implemented in
the military at Fort Hood.
“It’s a super tape” Randolph

“In November our subject*

Randolph said. “But we are in-
