XFAY YORK. Sept. 25 — (VP)
The widely-advertised Louis-
Conn heavyweight fight Oct.
12 has been wafted into such a
governmental detour that even
John Kieran of the New York
Times—radio quiz program ex-
pert—can't pop up with the
answer.
Kieran. chairman of the
sports writers' committee in
charge of the fight and presid-
ent of War Boxing, Inc., the
promoting committee, says, "We
don't know what the shooting's
all about."
Kieran referred to yester-
day's statement by Secre-
tary of Wiir Henry I-. St in-
stiii who suddenly announc-
ed that he would personally
investigate the "shocking"
details of the scheduled
light between Sgt. Joe
Louis and Corp. Billy Conn.
We are virtually in the same
I boat with Kieran. since we
were a member of the ultimate
committee that voted for Louis
and Conn together to get a to-
tal of $135,451.53 from the
fight.
We do not know the details
that shocked Secretary Stimson,
but we can assure him that
plenty of our citizens were sur-

There are only two conferen-

end, but when the firing is fin-1

that have dared to take on im-

weekend of the schoolboy chase.
There were three games play-

ei fCilgore sounded a warning
prised—to put it mildly—be-
cause of the fact that one full
week was required from the
time of the pay-off announce-
ment to the date when Secre-
tary Stimson got the full details.
And there is the suspicion
that Secretary Stimson might
not h&ve received the full details
then had not Representative
Donald L. O'Tolle of New York
asked congress for an investi-
gation Wednesday. In I fact,
O'Tooole, told the house that
the army was makink a "mock-
ery" of war by permitting Louis
and Conn to be paid for their ef-
forts as two members of the
army.
The history of the case is
this: On Sept. 8, it was announ-
ced that .Louis and Conn would
fight a return bout Oct. 12 at an
undesignated site. That announ-
cement was approved by a small
committee, composed mostly of
New York sports editors and
columnists. We did not attend
that meeting, since neither the
United Press nor (Associated
Press had been put on the orig-
inal committee.
Nor did we attend, the com-
mittee's second meeting when
it was disclosed that Louis and
Conn would have to be paid if
j they fought, and at which dis-
| cussion dealt with the award-
ing of a radio contract for the
fight broadcast.
Having been notified that
we were a committee mem-
ber, we attended the big
meeting in the Hotel New
Yorker, Sept. 18. At this
meeting it was announced
that a totnl of $135,451.53
must be paid to Louis and
Conn, otherwise the fight
would be called off. A sup-
posed representative of the
war department assured ev-
ery one that this plan had
been approved by the war
department, because the de-
partment realized that m
the firrtI figuring army re-
lief would bet about $500,-
COft from the fight.
Despite the warnings of Vet-
eran Grantland Rice, who was
resigning his job as chairman
of the sports committee, every-
one else voted to staee the fight
and to pay Louis and Conn the
sums mentioned.

Prospects are that the Chris-
tians will give a fine account
of themselves and the South-
west, for they pack offensive
power and a stout defense. Cap-
tain Bruce (Afford, end, and co-
captain Derrell Palmer, tackle,
are potential All-Americans. An-
other fine "pitching staff" for
the aerial attack includes Em-
ery Nix. Dean Bagley, and Bee-
cher Montgomery.
If the injury jinx leaves T.
C. U. alone, the Texas Aggies
must look to their champion-
ship laurels.
Three Saturday afternoon and
three Saturday night games

Tie For Pennant
NEW YORK, Sept. 25 —
(CP)—The Brooklyn Dodg-
ers stood squarely "on the
spot" today as the zero hour
in the National League flag
racie drew nearer.
It was entirely up to the
runner - up Dodgers —
who play the Boston Braves
at Ebbets field while the
C^rds are idle — whether
the senior circuit flag goes
to St. Louis for the first
time in eight years or whe-
ther the clinching goes over
until tomorrow wh;cn the
Red Birds return to action.
St. Louis clinched at least
a tie for the pennant yes-
terday by blanking the Cin-
cinnati Reds, 6-0, while the
Dodgers defeated the Bos-
ton Braves, 5-3. The victory
drew the lied Birds, who
have two more games with
the Chicago Cubs to within
one victory or one Dodger
defeat of the flag.
