Congress May Give
Early Consideration
To Postal Rate Hike
KANSAS CITY, Dec. 29,(UP)
A Kansas Representative pre-
dicets Congress may give early
consideration to an increase in
postal rates.
The forecast was made by
Edward Rees, Republican chair-
man of the House Postoffiee
Committee. He based his opinion
on the Interstate Commerce
Commission's grant of a tempo-
rary 25 per cent boost to rail-
roads in the rates they are paid
for carrying the mails. The in-
crease is estimated to give car-
riers an additional $34,500,000
in annual revenues.

Livestock Producers
Are Worried Over A
Likely Meat Ration
CHICAGO, Dec. 29, (UP)—The
American Meat Institute says
livestock producers are worried
about threats of government
controls.
As a result, the institute says,
some farmers are sacrificing
breeding stock. John Krey,
chairman of the institute's board
of directors, warns against liqui-
dation of livestock to save grain.
He says livestock production
tloes not reduce the food grain
supply to any appreciable ex-
tent.
Krey predicts that the average
American will get J2 pounds less
meat in 1948 than he ate this
year. He says 1947 meat produc-
tion totaled''23,200,000,000 pounds.
He estimates next year's output*
at 21,500,000,000 |)ounds. Krey
says:
"This will allow a civilian con-
sumption of about 144 pounds
per person, 12 pounds less than
this year, but five pounds above
the prewar average."
Krey does not mention prices
in his year-end sttatement, is-
sued in Chicago today. But he
does say that consumer purchas-
ing power for meat is expected
to remain at a high level in
1948.
USHER TOO GENEROUS
MILWAUKEE (UP)— Peter
U'bert, a church usher, was puz-
zled when the parishioners
flocked back to the church, wav-
ing the collection envelopes he
had just passed out. He dis-
covered the envelopes all con-
tained money contributed at pre-
1 vious collections.
Red Dominated People
Said Praying For War
LAWRENCE, Dec. 29, (UP)— I
Representative Walter Judd
says the people of countries
under Russian domination are j
praying for war.
The Minnesota Republican j
spoke at the opening session of i
tnu student conference on j
Christian Frontiers at Law-j
rente, Kansas, last night. He I
warned the group that there are I
really two worlds today, one |
under Russian control and one
controlled by the western
powers. And Judd says, the peo-
ple under Russian control "are
praying for war- to end their en-
slavement under Russia."
Judd warned that sooner or
later tne two worlds will have to
unite, either by conquest or by
treaty.
