Scoutmastership
HOME STUDY COURSE for SCOUTMASTERS
and OTHER SCOUT LEADERS
HP HIS course is designed to give a clear understanding of the educational principles
that underlie the Boy Scout Program and of practical methods of successful Troop
leadership. It is given with the approval and cooperation of the National Council, Boy
Scouts of America.
Although it is primarily for the aid and guidance of Scoutmasters, the course will be
of practical help to any one interested in work with boys. Many social workers have
taken it, as well as Troop Committeemen, Assistant Scoutmasters, Eagle Scouts and
parents of Scouts.
The course consists of twelve assignments, covering:
Essential Factors
Boys and Boy Leaders
Troop and Patrol Organization
Scoutcraft—Instruction Methods
Programs, Activities, Games & Contests
Troop Meetings, and First Aid
Hikes and Camps
Physical Welfare, Special Events
Citizenship through Scout Tests
How Scouting Works
Relationships and Policies
Scouting and the Community
Supplementary reading is required. Each
assignment includes certain chapters in
the "Handbook for Boys" and the "Hand-
book for Scoutmasters" and in material
specially prepared for students in this
course.
Twenty questions are given, based on each
assignment.
These are designed to keep the instruc-
tor informed as to how the student con-
ducts various phases of Troop work. They
provide an opportunity for the correction
of mistakes the student may be making.
A project is assigned to be tried out in
the student's own Troop.
Problems are given for the use of stu-
dents who are not actively connected with
a Troop.
Questions upon any phase of Scoutmas-
tership, especially upon problems that
have arisen in the student's own Troop,
will be answered by the supervisor.
The monthly magazine, "SCOUTING,"
is sent to every student during his enroll-
ment. There are also 26 pieces of liter-
ature furnished with the course.
Each assignment will require from two
to four hours. If one assignment is fin-
ished every two weeks, the course will be
completed in six months.
