POPULATION OF ORANGE SET AT 25,376 FOR 1960
ORANGE, May 19 (Spl) - A population increase of 4,202
was noted for the city of Orange in the 1960 federal census
figures presented to county and city officials Thursday
morning by Ronald G. Harper, district director from the
Beaumont office of the Federal Bureau of Census.
The new figures for Orange, which were far below the
estimated gain, brought the total population of the city to
25,376. This is an increase of 19.85 percent over the
1950 population of 21,174.
The census figures for Orange County showed a larger
gain than the city but fell short of the number estimated by
the chamber of commerce. Total population in Orange County
was set at 59,874 which is a 49.35 percent increase above the
1950 figures of 40,083.
The Orange metropolitan area, which inlcudes the cities of
Orange, Pinehurst, West Orange and Brownwood addition showed
a total gain of 5,651 since the last federal count.The 27.27
percent increase brought the population up from 27,174 to
33,180.
Vidor showed a new figure of 4,905 and West Orange figures
were listed as 4,827. Official count for Pinehurst was 1,090 and
for Brownwood addition the total was given as 1,281.
Harper presented the population figures to County Judge Sid
Caillavet and Lawrence Smaihall, city commissioner who accepted
the figures in the absence of Mayor C.H. Meeks. Mrs. Frances V.
Wilson, administrative clerk, also from Beaumont, accompanied
Harper.
A letter addressed to the city and county officials
stated, "These figures ?re believed to be substantially correct
but are subject to revision after the returns for non-residents
are credited to their proper locality and other routine checks
have been made."
Orange County comprises 356 square miles and the area of
the City of Orange in the corporate limits is 11.73 square
miles.
