AFTER TWENTY FIVE YEARS AS CITY SECRETARY, MAVIS McCLURE
PACKS UP MEMORIES. by Arlene Turkel
ORANGE- You can't spend 25 years in one spot and
leave without mixed emotions, Mavis McClure says.
Retiring as city secretary/personnel manager after
25 years with the city, she'll pack up her memories Thursday.
"Retirement will be a new beginning for me", Mrs.
McClure says confidently. "I've enjoyed all of the stages of
my life.
"Early on, I learned the quality of life depends
on how you handle disappointments and reversals - and I've
found that to be true. Ypu pick up and go on."
Mrs. McClure's city employment began as a clerk in
the water department in 1960. She was appointed city secretary
six years later.
As additional functions were added to her job, she
also became director of personnel service and civil service,
and administrator of Municipal Court.
"I grew with the job as things were added on", she says.
Today she oversees the 283 persons working for the city.
Selecting job applicants never was a problem. "We
always hired the best qualified."
After an initial interview, she would send at least
three applicants to a department supervisor who made the final
decision on employment. Fire and Police department employees
are chosen by Civil Service tests.
Mrs. McClure hasn't spent much time interviewing
people lately, though. At the time of this interview, the city
had no job vacancies.
Working with the various city departments - Water
and Sewer, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Theater, Collect-
ions, Data Processing, Finance, Sanitation, Fire and Police,
she seldom knew exactly what her workday would involve.73
