FOREWORD
This collage of articles has been occasioned by an instance that occurred several
weeks ago in the local schools.
A student was asked by their teacher to prepare a research paper on the Great
Depression of the 1930s. The student began a search for substantive material about that
era and experienced difficulty in finding enough material to satisfy the assignment of the
teacher. The student inquired of a grandmother about the depression.
Grandmother of this student, Dorothy Meadows checked through her material in
an attempt to assist the student. Unable to find relative materials in her files, called to ask
if I would survey the index of the Las Sabinas to determine if past issues contained any
information about the Depression. A search was made through the index for articles that
might contain any semblance of mention of the Depression and its impact on the personal
lives of Orange County Citizens. It was soon apparent that the Las Sabinas' past
publications contained nothing relative to the subject; thus, adding to the death of infor-
mation about the so-called "Great Depression."
Being brought to realize how little has been written about that period and the
relative few who remain and were of an age at the time to remember in vivid detail and
are able to recite their experiences today has prompted this review.
A request for articles about individuals' experiences during the depression was
made at the Orange County Historical Society Annual Dinner Meeting in November of
'04. The articles herein are being presented by persons of varied backgrounds. Some
lived in other parts of the country during that time and came to Orange in the late 30s and
early 40s; others grew up in this area; but, all have stayed in the area because this has
become "home." Individually and collectively, they have been a part of what has come
to make Orange County a great Place to live and rear families.
