SPIDER" LOCKHART
. . Giant defensive ace
The North Texas State campus has
proved to be a fertile hunting ffinund for
professional scouts seeking potential
football stars. Over the years, 82 North
Texans have become Sunday warriors,
and many of them have been top echelon
stars.
Four Eajflea were chosen in this year's
pro draft: consensus All-America tackle
Joe Greene, picked off by Pittsburgh; de-
fensive back Mike Shook, Washington
Redskins; Charles Beatty, Pittsburgh,
and defensive back Billy Woods, a form-
er Eagle just eligible for the draft this
y««ar, Denver Broncos. Fullback Tony
Reese was signed as a free agent by
the Pitta burgh Steelers.-

teams and on past rosters One of the
top players from North Texas was Time
niH^'Hiine All-American Abner Haynes.
After setting pass-catching and running
: . mU at North Texas, Haynes was
rookie of the year and all-league running
l >i k for the old Dallas Tesans und later
was a standout when the club moved to
Kansas City.
Ray Renfro, now th« passing coach
of the Dallas Cowboys, shares the NTSU
s.'uson record of 90 points—set almost
20 years ago—before he traded his Ea-
gle uniform for that of the Cleveland
Browns. He was an all-star for nary
years before retiring.
Washington Redskin fans will get a
good lo#k at North Texas products in
the future. In addition to Shook, the
Redskins had A. D. Whitfield on their
roster, and ex-Eagle John Love will re-
Negotiations Remain at Standstill
Between Joe Greene and Steelers
"There is no other profession in Amer-
ica that gives you no choice of who to
work for."
That was the comment of North Tex-
as State's All-America defensive tackle,
Joe Greene, as his negotiations with the
staff of the Pittsburgh Steelers remained
at a standstill this week.

Greene, the first-round draft choice
of the Steelers, is bargaining with the
Pittsburgh team through Consulting Ser-
vice Corporation, a firm that specializes
in handling negotiations of high priced
football players such as Greene and Ted
Kwalick, an All-America end from Penn
State.
THE 6-4, 279-POUND Greene missed
the Coaches All-Star game held in At-
lanta earlier this summer, and now it
looks like he will miss the College All-
Star game scheduled for Aug. 1 in Chi-
cago.
"I've always dreamed of playing in
those all-star games," Greene said Tues-
day, "but now it doesn't look like I'll be
able to play. The possibility of being
injured in these summer games is too
high. I just can't play unless I'm pro-
tected by a contract.

"I'VE HAD A FEW good words and
a few bad words with the Steelers,"
Greene commented. "Now I'm thinking
of signing with the Fort Worth Braves
or some other Continental League team.
1 would even consider signing for a less-
er contract. This is becoming a personal
thing. It looks like Pittsburgh doesn't
want to pay for good football players.
I've even asked for a trade, but the
Steelers said no."
Greene indicated he still hopes to
reach a satisfactory agreement with
Pittsburgh by Aug. 1. If not, he might,
consider signing with a Continental foot-
ball team for the fall season. There is
also a possibility that the Consulting
Servke Corporation might form a pro-
fessional touring football team nvide up
of unsigned players. The team would
play Continental and Canadian teams.
This setup would provide funds for the
players until agreements with the ma-
jor league teams were reached.
ONE REASON for this is that foot-
ball players are getting unfair deals
from the league," Greene said. "Take
O. J. Simpson, for instance. 0. J. is
asking for $f>00,000. Buffalo says this
is outrageous, but meanwhile they are
$400,000 ahead in season ticket sales
over last year. Why? Because they
drafted Simpson.
"Lots of pc-uple think agents are bad
just because they're professionals. That's
not true. 1 have complete faith that what
I'll have left after the 10 percent I pay
them will be a lot better than I could
do myself.
"In the meantime, I'll keep lifting
weights and running. I don't know where,
but I'll be playing for someone in the
fall."

join the team next January after a two-
year stint in the Army.
WHITFIELD is a starting halfback
As a rookie in 19<* 4 he was the team's
leading ground guiner with a four-yards,
per-carry average
Love, the nation's fourth-ranked pass
catcher while at NTSU, broke into the
Redskin lineup as a rookie. His ability
as a flanker, kicker and punt return man
greatly impressed roaches and fans.
Then the Army got him.
Carl (Spider) Lockhart, a defensive
safety for the New York Giants, is an
example of an Eagle with perseverance.
Lockhart weighed only 175 pounds in
1!1<>4 and was ignored by both league# in
the draft He signed as a free agent
with the Giants and hung on until he
made the team. Then he became a regu-
lar and he has since played in Pro-Bowl
games.
Eagle success is not confined to the
U. S. leagues; several North Texans have
stood out In the Canadian Football
League. Arthur Perkins, who played
here in 1962, is a fullback for Winnipeg.
FORMER EAGLE quarterback Zeke
Martin- a Little Ail-American who was
later mayor of Denton—once played for
Hamilton of the Canadian league.
It Is highly probable that Denton will
l>e well covered by pro scouts again this
year. Quarterback Steve Ramsey needs
only seven touchdown passes to set an
NCAA record. Since he averaged 2.4
touchdown tosses per game last season,
the record is considered likely.
Another pro prospect Is Playboy All
American Glen Holloway, an offensive
guard. Holloway may well repeat the
success of Greene, the first lineman
taken in the '(19 draft. Coach Rust says
of Holloway's ability: "He is as good as
if not better at his position now than
Greene waa at his."
