In tho practical affairs of llfo wo.
sponk much of hnblt UBttnlly having
reference to bad habits. It cannot bo
utr cased too nnicli the Importance and
results of the acquisition of habits.
Teachers parents and nil others In-
terested In tho welfare of tho young.
So nm otio has called man a bundle
of habits another says Wellington re
marki.1 habit was ten times nature.
Almost with tho down of conscious-
ness hnbltsbcglns to take tho place of
our natural Impulses and nt maturity
has bo Inhibited and strnngled our na-
tural tendencies as to render them
usploss. Nlnoty-nlno hundredths of
our activity Is automatic and habitual.
This bolng tho case and no ono will
deny It how necessary that wo in grain
Into the children such habits as shall
bo most useful to him through llfo.
Parents and teachers havo here their
greatest work In development of tho
child. Children nro largo Imitators
they become profnne swottrors clga-
Tetto smokers obscene following after
some older ono tho habit grows and
before long Is fixed.
Irregularity tardiness careless-
ness indlfferenco dlsrepect and lack
of persistence nro tho results 'of Indul-
gences which soon become fixed hnb-
Its with tho child and In tho man
means failure.
It should bo kept In mind that tho
behavior of tho child Is the best put
ward sign of Its educational progreBB-
Tho habits are tho stuff of which be-
havior consists. . .
Not a business man in Abilene would
employ a man whoso character were
irregular atendance upon duty a per-
sistent delay In entering upon his dal-
ly task careless atentlon the service
to be rendered. '
No parent but wishes and expects
his child to be all that becomes a mart..
Wo look Into the faces of our babes
and thank God for the opportunity we
hehold for adding another to; tho
-world's best and' good ones. In the
early stage our diligence Is great and
we succeed reasonably wplL After
awhile wo hand our child over to the
school and society relax our diligence
and are surprised when we learn that
our anticipations "are being blighted.
Our sanguine and honest expectations
are not being fulfilled;
If we would attain to our'idcals ns
to our children we must all teachers
parents and .every civic and religious
organization must' Join forces and uni
tedly labor to avoid the bad examples
and bring positively to bear upon these
vounc neonle ovory influence and
force which shall bring to. pass the
training and development of the de-
sired end.
Bear in mind that no signs ofdere-
lectlon should be encouraged. Every
smallest stroke of virtue or vlco leayes
Us scar. '
The drunken IUp Van Winkle ex-
cused every new derolcltlon by say-
ing; ''1 wont count this time." Per-
haps not but all permanent drunkards
hecome such by so many separate
drinks;
Likewise we may become-: camne-
tont desirable and expert In nil that
pertains to usefulness by so mnny sop-
arate acts and hours each day and
each week.
If our "young peoplo could be Im-
pressed with tho importance of their
conduct and tliOvConsequences of faith
ful diligent devotion to duty each day
they need have neither fear nor anx-
iety as to tho end. The home society
and the state will p&ss'lnto competent
hands and progress marks ovory step.
Respectfully W. J. CLAY.
