RESIDENCE OF MRS. St 3L
STEEL ENTERED LAST NIGHT
Last night when Mrs. J M. Steele
and Miss Pattiq Finner who stays
with Mrs. Steel returned from church
they found things in quite a predica-
ment. Someone had entered the house
persumabjy in a search for valuables.
However nothing was missing except
a few peaches which had been left on
the side-board. Mrs. Steel and Mbs
Pattle wore very much excited over
the affair and spent the night with a
neighbor. Mrs. Steel has lived In this
city for oveY twenty years and this
is the first time her house was -jver
unlawfully entered.
Jack Phillips and P. J.- Bruce two
prospectors from Ranger left this
morning for their respective homes.
The latter was in the. saloon business
here in 1882.
TEXAS INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS
SEMI-BITD3IINOUS COAL.
The resources of Texas arq being
gradually developed and are making
her an empire self-sustaining In all
the commercial and material demands
of her people and almost exery day
brings to light some valuable natural
resource. The latest and most valua-
ble dfscoverey .of hidden wealth in the
Lone Star state being a yeln of. high-
grade seml-bltumlnous coal -made by
Mr.. W. Qj Bartels president and gen-
eral manager of the CarllnVllle Coal
Co: of Carllnvllle 111. who has been;
a coal operator for the Past' thirty-five
years and Mr. H. M. Young formerly
associated with Mr. Morgan Jones of
this stafo and later manager of the
Peabody Coal Co. one of the largest
producing mines in Illinois. These
gentlemen prospected in what is
known as Bear Grass' coal field In
Leon county situated on the Trinity
and Brazos Valley Ry. and after an.
investigation of other coal properties
in the state decided that was the best
.field owing to the superior quality of
the coal for steam and domestic pur-
poses as demonstrated by chemical an-
alysis and. actual tests and experi-
ments. '
These gentlemen have organized the
Bear Grass Coal company and are
now actively engaged in mining and
shipping the product of this splendid
coal field having established a modern
uptodato plant with a dally capacity
of 1000 tons which will be Increased
as demand requires. The property Is
centrally located the Trinity and Bra-
zos Valley Ry having built a flve-
mlle spur to the mine thus making
the freight hauls to the largest con-
suming centers short. It is a pure
domestic coal ot equal value with the
best Alabama and Oklahoma coals and
of equal weight per cubic foot but
carrying a higher per cent of fixed
carbon being free from smoke soot
and clinkers and having only about
7 1-2 per cent ash' as against 14 to
1G per cent nsh contained In the high
priced domestic coal now used In this
state and about one-fourth of one per
cent sulphur which is the lowest min-
imum for coal. It is a perfect substi-
tute for Pennsylvania anthracite gen-
erally used in a base burner or hop-
per stove at a cost of $13.00 to $16.00.
per ton. The equipment of the mine.
Is the most modern and with sucln ex-
perienced coal men as Messrs. Bartels
and Young ln charge of the property
a loiigfelt want among the domestic
as well as the Industrial fuel consum-
ers will be. filled.
