MASKED MEN OVERPOWER GUARD
CROWLY July 20. Soventcen sec-
tions of the Mermentnu dam at Grand
Chenler built by the rice farmers of
the Mermentau basin to protect It from
salt water were blown out by dyna-
mlto at midnight Friday by masked
men. The length of the dam blown
out was 140 feet.
The nows was brought to Mermontau
by Captain Sweet of tho Olive who ar-
rived at 3:30 this evening and tele-
phoned tho pewg to Crowley.
At 11:15 Friday night a crowd of
men surprised tho three guards at tho
dam bound them and set charges of
dynamite at various points along tho
dam. These wore exploded by olec-
trlclty. Tho guards wore released at 2
o'clock.
Thoro are forty-one sections of tho
dam and of these soventcon are said to
