Ik'lluda'fl Introduction to the now
professor was a distinctly unceremoni-
ous ouo. Tripping lightly neross the
iinicl soggad pavement she suddenly
caught one foot In n tangled heap of
wire flung down from the telephone
and telegraph linos by tho ravaging
hand of a recent hurricane and stum-
bled precipitately Into tho arms of a
blond giant who supported her vnlor-
oualy till flho had blushlngly recovered
hor poise.
"Thanks nwfully" she said. "Yon
have doubtless saved my life."
"Your frock more likely" he replied
lifting his hat. "1 am no end glad I
happoued along at tho propitious mo-
ment." llelfudn returned him a little com-
bination smile and nod as she lifted her
dainty crisp skirts .and pursued her
way cautiously across tho slippery
street.
Ilardlman restrained his eagerness
until a reasonably safe length of tlmo
had elapsed before turning to look
around. lie bad gained tlie opposite
sidewalk by this time and his glance
back nt the girl betrayed Instantly to
the casual pedestrians that the piofess
or had been abruptly shaken from hN
phlegmatic attitude of mind.
Belinda turned Into Oak street all
unconscious of the .scrutiny that fol
lowed her. ami Ilardlman continued
his way in a tumult of chaotic reflec-
tions lie reached his hotel In a state
of mind that was quite impjss'ble
The ver. fl -st look into the gill's face
had thrilled him stnrtllngly. The ac-
cidental contact of her delicate form
against his had finished the job. He
tol.l himself that it was a case of loe
at first bight. So much for the explo
slon of h' lifelong theories! Then a
perfect regiment of doubts and fcars I
assailed him. Perhaps after all she
was not a girl but a married woman.
The professor ate his dinner In si
lence. Afterward he went to his room
and for some Inexplicable reason ex
changed hs daik suit for one of lighter
and more becoming texture. He brush
ed his hiir painstakingly placed a soft
gray alpine hat on his head and saun
tered forth In quest of fiesh air. It
was almost daik before he returnel.
disappointed and oddly depressed. He
eschewed supper altogether and went
back to his room for n solitary cigar
and meditation.
Meanwhile Belinda had reached
home put on a pair of dry boots and
settled herself for a quiet afternoon.
School would open on Monday and she
would not have many more afternoons
to lounge as they would be given over
to outdoor recreation after the trjlng
hours of tho morning. The town clock
striking 0 aroused her. She tore up
the last letter old love letters they
were nnd tossed the bits Into the grate.
Then she made a careful toilet and
went downstairs to dinner. Teddy Kv-
erltt was coming over that evening she
recollected but for the first time In
many months tho prospect or a visit
from that individual gave her no par-
ticular pleasure.
Sunday morning she selected her
most becoming gown and hat. It was
a perfect day and her satisfaction was
almost complete. She created the usual
stir as she walked up the aisle of the
village church and (ook her seat near
the front. Less than live minutes aft-
erward the professor came In aud sat
down In the pew opposite. Ho had-
been waiting outside half the morning
unobserved but alert After service
Belinda gave him a fleeting smile or
recognition nnd for some reason that
was now to her turned and hurried
home ns fast as her pretty patent
leather covered feet could carry her.
When school opened the following
day. the first person she encountered
on entering the faculty hall was tho
new professor. She blushed to her
ears and tried valiantly to retain her
scholarly demeanor but the dogged
crimson showed persistently through
tho tnnned cheeks and her oyes were
puzzles.
Ilardlman made no effort to conceal
hjs gratification or. If he did. he was
not at oil successful. Tho rcit of the
teachers looked on In good natured
amusement. None of them were old
maids.
In a month tho acquaintance grew to
Intimacy. In two It became a serious
proposition. After three tho only thing
lacking were the words and tho ring.
The professor had nt last made up
his mind to propose. He had meant
to restrain his ardor till the close of
tho term but when It became manifest
that the adorable little Instructor of
grade No. 4 reciprocated his direction
prudence Avas thrdwn to H10 winds.
IIo sat In his study pondering. Sud-
denly lie get to work dlsposlug of Ills
reports In short but thorough order.
IIo made n point or novor Blighting his
duties for anything. Then he drew
forth a square envelope and sheet of
white paper to match. This seemed
to him tho mostdlrect nnd final wny
of sottiln-j mattors between them.
Belinda' woh a coquette there was ti'
getting around that fact oven In o:io's
most gonerous moments and Hnrdl-
mnn was determined to comer hor
complotely. IIo composed his lines
carefully; tlioy were Inspirational. And
now that ho lind broken the Ice nt last
ho meant to carry thlnis to n rapid
finish. The professor was nothing If
nof businesslike. IIo fished In n' draw-
er ami pulled out a teacher's ruina-
tion blnnk. Tills ho put la n separate

recognized Hitrdlinnifn familiar back-
hand. She tore open tho envelope
eagerly and scanned tho contents with
whitening face. The paper fell from
tier fingers and sho leaned limply
against (lie banister rail. So sho was
asked. In the briefest possible wny to
resign and sho had dnred to dream-
she had been so sure she had been"
such a fool I She smothered tho sob
In her throat and In (illicit scorn of her-
self dnshod tho hot tears from her
eyes. Then she pulled herself togeth-
er sharply and went upstairs With
trembling fingers she filled out tho
blank nnd directed It to tho board.
Drab weeks followed. Every ef-
fort tho professor nindo to gnln un au-
dience with Belinda failed. IIo hud
mortliled nnd Insulted her flagrantly
nnd she would see that he got no more
chances to repeat tho Indignity. As to
Ilardlmni). he was on the rack. Kool-
like he reflected he had rushed in nnd
frightened her nway with his maudlin
lniKrtuunto lovemaklng and thus lost
her for good. But perhaps after all it
was not for him that she cared but
the other fellow! What a dolt ho had
been to presume upon the affection of
a matchless creature like that! Life
grew to be n bitter struggle to him.
nnd he began all nt ouco to look his
thirty-five years.
It was In May almost the eloe of
school. Tho day was warm nnd op-
pressive and u lazy brcczo was blow-
ing. The professor made his 11111 in
absent weariness toward the school-
house stopping on the wny to get bis

man paid no attention whatever but
thrust the letter Into hor hands In a
determined nnsterful wny which she
could not resist.
Hypnotized she opened it and rend
the lines through tho crimson moving

Belinda caught her breath In some-
thing between a sob and a laugh as
she lifted her eyes shyly to his keen
appealing apologizing and nt last com
manding glance.
The professor wns tardy very tardy
that morning but he gave his excuse
of a headache glibly and mendaciously
and dismissed pupils and teachers for
a holiday.
This he spent with Belinda.
England's National Color.
Why red should have been selected
ns tho national color becomes Intel-
llgble when we look at the cross of
St. George. Sir Walter Scott when he
wrote of how "their own sea hath
whelmed those red cross powers" wns
merely anticipating the phrase of to-
day. But Oliver Cromwell when for
tho first time ho put the English sol-
dier In a red coat probably did as
much as St. George to monopolize red
ns tha national color. The aggressive
color has however many meanings
nnd tins lent Itself to many uses. In
tho days or tho Romans when It
flared on the head of a slave It stood
for rroedom; In the days of the Kronch
revolution It stood for freedom backed
by blows while In the streets of tho
city today the red cross stands for
succor. So far back as the reign of
Henry II. there wns a red book of the
exchaquer. a record or the mimes of
nil who held lands "per baronium"
nnd at this moment persons of conse-
quence in the service or the Btato And
their mime entered In a rod book.
