SEDALIA MO. Fob. 22-An at-
tempt to 'derail an eautbound passon-
sor train on tbo Missouri Pacific rail-
road evidently for tho purpose of
robbery was made at- OUeravllle
twenty miles east of hero at midnight
last night A rail wad removed bo
that when the passenger hit the brok-
en place It would pitch into a gully
-which runa on cither side of tho track.
But tho attempt miscarried. The
passenger was lato and an extra
freight coming 6ut ahead hit tho bro-
ken place and jumped tho track. Tho
freight was of courso wrecked tho en-
gineer fireman and brakeman being
seriously Injured
Investigation Bhowed where the tod
"bers had lain in wait for the passenger
train. They were evidently on foot
and their camp fire when found by
officers was still smoldering. They
did not wait to seo the result of the
wreck of the freight but immediately
left tho scene.

embezzling thirty two thousand dol-
lars from the -First National bank of
Hattiesburg Miss. were sentenced to

Atlanta Georgia by Jtfdge Mills of
the United States court here today. Di-
rectly following the verdict in tho
trial attorneys for Smith and Harper

FORT WORTH Feb. 22. The Exe-
cutive Committee of tho re-organlzed
republican party of Texas Is here in
session today to select a city for a con-
vention to name delegates to tho Na-
tional Convention. The committee Is
composed of fifteen whites and six-
teen negroes and opposes Taft- Roose
velt combination and Cecil Lyon lead
er of tho "regular" Texas republicans.
Two seats of delegates will go from
Texas to Chicago meeting which will
decide which delegates are entitled to
seats.
Elks Ladles' Night.
Last night was Elks Ladies night
and one of 'the best dances of the seas
on was enjoyed by some ' thirty-five
couples and twenty-five outsiders. Mu-
sic was furnished by Wlnnlford's or-
chestra and about twenty numbers
were danced. Mrs. Sam Wells assis-
ted by Mrs. Alexander and Miss Berry
was hostess. Refreshments were serv
ed consisting of 'coffee with whipped
cream fruit salacj sandwiches and
pickles. It was an early hour In the
morning when "Home Sweet Home"
was played and everyone said this
dance was the best In a long time.

side of the paper went down to tho
press the elevator brake gave way and
tho forms were slammed to tho floor
below with such force that two pages
