repeated by tho lips of a sainted fath
er at tho family altar have been fam-
iliar to my cars; hut noVor boforo have
their full significance boon felt so viv-
idly as when at art early hour this
morning I listened to tho solemn words
awful In their Import that foil from
tho lips or Judgo J. W. PaU6rson as
In trembling tones ho pronounced Uio
dentil sentence upon J. B. Cason tried.

Tho cold gray light or early morning
BUigglpd thorugh tho duty coilrt rodm
windows and fell lrt dim rays upon
tho prlson-palld faco of tho convicted
man facing tho penalty or his crime.
A young man tfenrco In tho prlmo of
his early manhood nnd not a bad look-
ing man by any means; It was difficult
indeed to conceive or him ns commit-
ting ono ot tho most atrocious crimes
that eVqr stained tho annals or Parker
effunty; and yet tho law and tho evi-
dence have found him guilty not only
of murder In tho first degree but as
tho evidence showed for the purpose
Of robbing his victim of $1600 which
ho' carried on his person.
Not only this but tho condemned cut
tho body of his victim' In two that lie
might the moro easily- conceal it in the
ravine where It was found threo weeks
later In tho Eddlomnn pasture.
"When asked Uio question whether
ho had anything to say Cason. leaned
his harid upon tho tablo and with lips
whlto wlthsuppressed emotion said
"Nothing hut what I have said before
Judgo that I am not guilty" Judge
Patterson's Voice trembled with emo-
tion as ho pronounced tho death sen-
tence setting the dato of May 22 as
tho dato of execution.
A most dramatic scene was enacted
about two hours later when nt the big
religious meeting being hold in tho
courthouse today tho comdemned man
was allowed to attend the services by
special request of Evangelist Walton.
Cason was escorted In by SherlfWope
and on deputy and probably not
twenty people In that vast audience
wero aware that a man under sentence
or death was present listening to his
last sermon. What must have been
his feelings no mortal tongue can tell
but he listened to the powerful appeals
of the man ot God to fors'ako slnand
seek salvation with the utmost com-
posure and only when the choir sang
"When the trumpet of tho Lord shall
sound and time shall bo no more' did
ho manifest tho .least show of emo-
tion. i
Pastor Morgan came and knelt by
his side and besought him to make his
peace with his Maker before Jt was
everlastingly too late. Finally at the
last appeal of the preacher Cason rose
to his feet; and thus signified hisdeslro
for salvation.
After the servico was over many
people crowded around to get a glimpse
of the prisoner and many shook hands
With him and exhorted him to make
his peace wlthjapd..
Cason has all along been opposed to
talking wltli the newspaper folks al-
leging that ho had not. been fglrly
treated by them In the reports given
out to the press.-''''

NEW YORK April 3. Beautiful Ev-
olyn Nesbtt Thaw of angej child fame
did not take her departure fpr Europe
this morning as had been announced
sho would by the person who Jssued .a
statment from her hotel yesterday af-
ternoon. A perusal of tho passenger list of
the big liners failed to disclose her
name and sho failed to show up at tho
pier when tho liner pulled out. Her
whereabouts now seem to be a matter
of much mystery. Sho was not at
her hotel when visited and the man-
ager said that ho did not know whero
sho had gone. .
It la thought that sho had tho state-
ment that she was going to Europe
given out moro for ab llnd than any-
thing else so that sho could retire
from the limelight for aw hlle owing
to tho recent potorlety that has been
given her slnco tho trial of her hus-

Manager Dick of tho St. George
whero sho has had apartments for
some time could "glvq no Information
concerning her and ' when asked it
It wero true that ho had asked her
to glvo up her apartments on account
of tho story published about her and
E R. Thomas ho declined tos ay any-
thing. Howover it Is known that tho
story cost him a groat deal ot good
patronage and Itl a generally believed
that her removal from tho hotel fol-
lowed a request to vacate her rooms.
