The- lieutenant who has (ho reputa-

United States received a telegram ono
day In July .1903 from tho president
of an express company asking him to
go to Philadelphia whore a tost was
to bo madot of a "burglar-rtroof" safo
A few weeks before. that the express
company had installed a now snfo on
ono of Its cars running out of Chica-
go which tho manufacturers declared
was practically burglar-proof. An or-
der for several hundred of tho safes
were about to bo placed 1th the man-
ufacturers when tho ono that was
made as a sample was blown by train
robbers near Davenport la. 'This of
course cancolled tho negotiations to-
ward letting tho contract but tho safo
which to make another strong box
that would withstand tho assault of
all the burglars in tho land. '
The express' company was 'as anx-
ious to got a burglar-proof safe- as
were the manufacturers to makekme
so tho officials agreed to equip al)
the company's cars with new safes if
they proved to bo impervious to train
rubbers. A four-ton safe waB built for
the experiment and as hundred of
thousands of dollars depended upon It
being able to withstand the attack of
cracksmen exponse wa3 not spared
In manufacture.
At last It was completed and the
manufacturers notified tho express
company officials that they had suc-
ceeded in making a safe that all h
couldn't open unless the combination
was known The president of the ex-
press company who by the way was
a United States senator beganto look
around for a handy man Who under-
stood tho gentle art of cracking a safe.
Ho asked a few senators and some
congressmen if they knew anything
about the (business and ono or two of
them became Indignant Failing to
get any information on tho subject at
Washlngto he wrote to "BiJUy" Pln-
kerton explaining what he wanted.
Tho rioted detective answered the sen-
ator's letter recommending Lieuten-
ant Larkin as tho "very man for tho
Job" A day or two later Lieutenant
Larkin received a telegram from the
president of tho express company urg
ing him tol start east at once. The
message advised htm to "seo William
PInkerton and he will explain."
Packing his "kit" or his satchel
rather the lieutenant caught a train
that nlgt and was in Philadelphia 24
hours later. Tho safo was waiting
for him; so was the manufacturer and
the officials of the express company.
Tho lieutenant examined tho strong
box with the eye of an expert In such
matters. It was made of twelve thlck-
esses of steel '
"Any tools you wont lieutenant"
said tho president of the express com-
pany. "You can buy and have tho bill
sent to me."
"I don't need .any tools" said Lar
kin scornfully. "AIL I want Is a couplo
of old gunny sacks and some 'dy'."
"Some 'dy?" queried tho president
What do you want of dye?"
"I guess you don't understand me"
said Larkin. "Dy Is what tho 'pete
men" call dynamite. Nltro-glycerln Is
'soup.' I am going to use dy as I Hko
it better than 'soup' and It Isn't so
dangerous to handle."
"Oh I see" remarked tho president
winking at tho other officials. "You
are going to use dy as you prefer It
to soup. Every man has his likes and
dislikes."
Tho safo was loaded on a truck and
taken Washington Park a pleasure re-
sort a few miles outside Philadelphia
on tho Delaware- river On reaching
