was made today that a majority of the
committee appointed by General Van
Zandt commander of the Texas Divis-
ion of United Confederate Veterans
to watch legislation affecting text
books had signed resolutions calling
on the campa throughout the state
to vfork for a nullification of the
school book contracts. The means
suggested la the appointment of com-
mittees of three whose duties it will
bo to. create sentiment In favor of the
proposal and to stimulate support on
tho part of their respective Senators
and Representatives in the Thirty-first
.Legislature. Signers of the resolutions
made known today are: "VV. W.. Heart-
Belli of Marshall Joel H. B. Miller and
Fred Carleton of Austin and A T.
Watts of Beaumont. "V. R. Richard-
son of this city is chairman of the
committee. The resolutions will be re-
turned to General Van Zandt and will
doubtless be distributed by him to the
various camps of the state for action.

tho State Text-Book Board have heen
convicted by intrinsic evidence of vio-
lation of that provision pf the text-
book law that prohibits the adoption
of books containing' partisan matter.
The resolutions mention furthor that
tho text-book law provides that the
contracts may be rescinded by the Leg-
islature. They moreover urge ;the
Confederate camps of the state to ex-
ercise their- Influence to accomplish
the enactment of a law that will ren-
der impossible the adoption of partl-
j san sectional or offensive books vlew-
ed from the Southern standpoint. The
reception to be accorded these reso-
lutions will largely determine the sta-
tus of the text-book controversy In so
far as the veterans are concerned. If
the old soldiers endorse tho sentiment
contained In them they will doubtless
act at. once in conformity with the
suggestions. If they rather incline
to the policy of permitting tho matter
to rest where it is with tho objection-
able matter stricken from the texts
that will bo taught for the next five
years it is probable that favorablo ac-
tion will not be taken on the resolu-
tions. Some of - the old soldiers are
