SENATOR GORE DENOUNCES
SPEAKER CANNON
DANVILLE 111. Jan. 8 That "Dem-
ocrats should give aid and comrort to
Republican progressives who voted
against Speaker Cannon against Ills
rule against the tariff and against the
ship subsidy" was the opinion ex-
pressed by Senator Thomas P. Gore
Democrat speaking tonight at the
Jackson Day banquet in thlB city the
home of the Speaker of the House.
"Their heads" said the Senator
"should not be carried on a charger
merely because by refusing to fawn
they failed to' thrive.
"I have a due regard for the pro-
prieties of this placo and this occa.
sion" continued Senator Gore. "I
came neither to bury Cannon nor to
praise him. I wngc no war against Can-
non nor Aldrich as individuals but
against Cannonis'ni and Aldrichlsm as
a system of misgovernment. Person
ally I wish them good health and In-
crease of days politically I wish de-
thronement unto them and their dy-
nasty.
"In the reign of stand-pat tyranny
I have little choice among the tyrants.
"Destroy the despotismjl3f you woud
destroy the despot. Cannon and Al-
drich are Indeed guiddlng genii of the
new Administration the friends and
favorites of the King .perched upon the
very arms of the throne.
- "Roosevelt was able to run his Ad-
ministration "without their dominion.
It seems that M Taft surrendered at
th'e fiist summons. Roosevelt in his
way was the friend of progress and
the foe of privilege and the peopje may
yet prefer the strenuosity of Roosevelt
to the sinuosity of Taft. That may yet
conclude that 'the hands are the hands
of Esau but the voice Is Jacob'B
voice.'
"The tariff" Senator Gore said "en-
ables onp man to get without earning
what another man earns without get-
ting which enables the jeweled hand
of gieed to pick the threadbaro pock-
ets of the needy
"The President says that the object
of revision" waB not to reduce prices
but to prevent an advance. A revela-
tion this but even this object has fail-
ed. There has been a saturnnlla of
high prices since the now law was ap.
proved but you need no other res
minder than experience? The Presi-
dent has niso assured us that the 'new
law is the best law ovor enacted b)
the Republic What a splendid com-
pliment. If increasing duties bo tho
test It is par excellence at best."
Senator Gore condemned the ship
subsidy centralization and a central
bank. Continuing he said:
"The country is on jts knees now
praying that wo may escape the scan-
dal In Alaska. An Investigation has
become imperative. Let us hope there
will bo no wanton ubo either of lamp
black or of whitewash. Rather let
tho white light bo turned on tho facts
and the truth set before the peopie"s
eyes. This demonstrates tho necessity
for a change of administration. Lot
