Iioubb Miss Do Janon was playing wltu
her pet dog which she took Tvlth her
in her sensational disappearance -with
Cohen who is 50 years old and a mar-
ried man. Cohen was seated in an
adjoining room reading.
At the Chicago avenue police station
Cohen admitted his Identity and MIS3
De Janon sobbingly pleaded to the au
thorities to restore her to her parents.
Cohen revealed to the officers the atory
of his flight with the girl from Phila-
delphia a flight extending for thous-
ands of njlles through tho United
States and Canada and in which a trip
to England was Interrupted at Halifax
becauso the steamship officials would
not permit the presence of Miss Do Jo-
lion's pet dog On tho vessel. At least
that was Cohen's explanation of tho
nbaifdonment of the sea. voyage which
legan at St. Johns N. B but the po.
lice say he planned to leave the boat
at Halifax in order to elude detec-
tives '
Cohen and Miss Do Janon arrived
here Thursday and rented a room in
a boarding house owned byMr3.Franlc
Perrln. Cohen Introduced tho girl as
his daughter Alice. He Identified him-
self as Robert King and said he was
n barber and that ho had just arrived
from Montreal in search of work.
The girl when questioned by the
officers at the pollco station after she
had admitted her identity statai thntj
she and Cohen had reached Chicago
TVlth but ?1X0 betwoon them and that
she gave Cohen a bracelet and neck-
lace which ho pawned in ordor to pro-
cure money to live on. Their appre-
hension followed a roport to tho po-
lice In tho afternoon by Mrs. Perrln
Who had Beon pictures of tho eloping
pair in the newspapers nnd suspected
that her now boarders wore the miss-

tion proceedings nnd tho Philadelphia
police were notified to come to Chi-
cago for the prisoner. Miss do Janon
and her dog wero taken to tho womau'a
department of tho Harrison street po-
Hcq station.
Cohen outlined to tho police tho
route taken In tho effort to escape
capture. Hq said they went from
Philadelphia to Now York Dec. ZO
After remaining In Now York only a
rpw hours they hoarded a train for
Montreal In Montreal they took a
train fpr St. John N B whore they
took a boat for Liverpool At Halifax

abouts Iu. the.possesslon of Miss do Janon
the police found several letters some
addressed to her parents and ono writ-
ten to her by Cohon dated Dec. 14 in
which the waiter begged the girl to
think twjco before eloping with him.
In this letter he says: '
"My Dear Roberta: After thinking
tho matter over thoroughly I came to
tho conclusion that having nothing
but your welfare and future happiness
In mind to show you really the first
time since I have known you how
honest my love for you is by advisitlng
you not to make tho step which you
will Jater regret and which will ais
grace you and make you unhappy in
the future. '
"You know that I lovo you as I
never loved a woman before. Further-
more you "know In your heart that I
am strictly on the level and I am will-
ing to sacrifice my future happiness
only in order to do tho right and
square thing by you.
"Think matters over and weigh ev-
erything conservatively and you will
find out that my motives toward you
are as pure and honorable as only a
man can bo towards the girl whom he
devotedly loves. To take you away
from hero just to gratify a whim re-
gardless -of the destructive conse-
quences to yourself would show me up
only ns a coward 'and not worthy of
such an angel as yourself.
"If you can see my noble motives in
the right light you will appreciate me
that much more and can only respect
me even if you can nevor learn to love
me."
The letter unsigned was written on
stationery of the JJellevuo-Stratford
hotel and was mailed to Miss de Janon
at hor grandfather's address in Phila-
delphia. A letter written by Miss De Janon
to her father Ferdinand do Janon
which she had not yet mailed was also

Dec. 29 she bought a cheap brown
