current here today that American con
ductors and engineers on the Morgan
lino in the Republic of Mexico who'
threatened to strike unless given cer-

they demanded by the Mexican gov.
ernment. This Indicates that no men
will be employed unless undergoing a
rjgld physical and mental examina-
tion and that the Order of Railway
Trainmen will bo represented on tlie
examining board. If the demands of
the Americans had been refused It
would have' meant say students of the

SEES IN POSTAL- BANK
A GREAT MONEY TRUST.
WASHINGTON Feb. 2. Violent op-
position to the Postal Savings Banks
bill was again demonstrated in the
Senate this afternoon. Senator Hey-
burn promised to tear the measure to
shreds before it could reach a vote. He
said it purposes a great money'
lending trust under the Government
controlled by three trustees.
He contended that inasmuch as tho
found under the bill would reach fully
$700000000 It would enable the trus-
tees to dictate the rate of Interest
throughout tho country.
"In other words the Government
purposes to go Into the loaning busi-
ness" ho said "and intends to fix the
rate of interest at 2 per cent."
Ho asked what the effect would bo
on Incomes derived from funds Inves
ted at 5 and 0 per cent. "Should we"
he asked "so forget our duty to the
wldowd nnd orphans whoso funds are
thUB Invested ps to disturb tho earn-
ing capacity of their investments?"
He deelnred that the bill should bo
denominated "an act to constitute tho
Government a collection agency for
tho banks.''
Senator Davis abandoned his opposi-
tion upon tho acceptance of an amend-
ment providing tha tpostnl funds may
be deposItodMn any bank under legal
supervision. Sonator Raynor Is pre
paring a speech in which ho will at-
every precaution to secure a jury box
of men in every way qualified to ren-
der a fair and Impartial verdict!
A large number of witnesses Is In
attendance and Interest Is already at
high pitch mostly on account of tho
prominence of the defendant. It Is ex-
pected that members of the leglsla-.
tive Investigating committee that re
cently conducted a penitentiary probe
and reported the state penitentiary
system In 'a deplorable state will ba
