It Is commonly reported that the
number of mulattocs Is decreasing
and observation In the South tends
to confirm that vjew but the census
returns show rtn Increase for the
country onernily. Among mulattocs
aro Included all persons except full-
blood negroes who show nny trace of
negro liloodt
In 1910 tho census enumerated 9.-
8727703 negroes of whom 20.-O.CSi
or 20.9 . iicr cent were reported as
utulnttoes. In 1890 there were coun-
ted 7488070 negroes of whom 1132-
000 or 15.2 per cent wore reported
as mulattocs. In 1870 there were
counted 4880000 negroes or whom
584049 or 12 per cent were reported
ns mulattocs.
This showing of a steudly Increase
would be alarming but for the accom-
panying suggestion thnt It docs not
necessarily mean a growing Inter
mixture of whites nnd negroes and
that It may be accounted for. by a
growlne intermixture of mulattocs
and fulllilood negroes and tho mar
riage between mulattocs This al-
though the number of mulattocs Is
increasing It may still be truo that
fower children arc born of puro
white and black parents than formerly.
From the Southern point of view It
Is encouraging to find that tho coin-
imrlHon ot states shown relatively
fewer mulnttocs whore the negro
population In densest. In New Eng-
land tho 'East North Central and In
the Pacific Htutes about onb-third of
the noeroes aro reported ns mulaU
toes while in the middle .Atlantic
stales und in tho South a ueTierul
average of about 20 per cent1 is the
the very outset cars began to aver-
ago nround seventy-eight miles an
hour which surprised the thousands
of spectators along the course.
Totzlnff in the Fiat which ho will
drive In tho Vanderbllt cup raco
Wednesday skirted a lap on the
eight-mile track In 0 minutes 10 sec-
onds a little better than eighty mil-
es average He nlstdrovo several
laps with his larger car of the same
make which he Is to pilot in the
grand prlx but his time With this was
slower.
A thrill was provided when Caleb
Brngg In the big car lie will drive
In the grand prlx came down tho
stretch at nbout a nlnety-mile-nn-hour
clip nnd two yards of a rear
tire thread flew off. This shot into
the nlr to n height of several thous-
and feet aud returned almost to the
Identical Bitot where tho machine wus
when tho tire flew off.
Tho Course of the car was not di-
verted. When next to the last lap
the right lens or Tctzlnff's goggles
was struck by a stone thrown tip
when ho was passing nHother car.
Splintera or glass from the broken
lens were driven Into his eye but be
continued on lie was not seriously
hurt but Bcvxn-al bits of glass Were
removed from his eye and he started
off on another lap
Records "Jlnj Go.
As such fast time was made on tho
rebuilt course on which the drivers
bad previously had no practice Sinr-
ter Fred J. Wagner and otlier ex-
perts are sanguine that the world's
race record Will be broken hero. Tho
present record Is held by TeUIaff
approximately 78 1-2 nillcs an hotin
made at Santa Monica this year Tho
opinion is Ainnnlmcum thnt the Van-
derbllt record of 7170 miles made
by Mulford at Savannah last year
njul Hid grand urlx record of 74.15
made by David llrace-Brown On tho
same course will bo lowered.
