LONDON December 18 AlthouRh there cemt no doubt that
the Ruuiant are retreating at present and any anticipation the Allies
have held of an early invasion of Germany must be dismissed. Con
siderable tny.lery surrounds the reported decisive victory which the
Germans arc celebrating.
Vienna Rives few details of the fighting in the east and silence
is maintained rcgardm( North Poland where the victory is said to
have been achieved.
The German official report dismisses the battle with the state-
ment: "In Poland wr are still pursuing the enemy who continues to
give way."
Armterilani dispatches heighten the confusion by quoting from
Berlin papers received there as esprrssing disappointment at the
failure to mention names of battle fields; no tangible results of fight-
ing being dUclotcd; and no lists of the number of captured guns or
prisoners is given.
Son.e disappointment is frit here at the silence of the Russians
and advices from Pctrograd are awaited eagerly.
The Allies offensive on the west continues to progress slowly in
Flanders and the vicinity of Arras. It L still a matter of siege war-
fare. Berlin says the Allies' attacks have been repulsed and their
casualties heavy when the German: mine the trenches which the Al-
lies compelled them to evacuate.
As a result of the bombardment of the east coast towns the
Kingdom has lxn flooded wit-- posters reading: J'.verje Sear-
