Arnarillo's water j.rohlem i a most vexation
persistent real thing. Some of us have shown a
tendency to dodge it. but that will not do away
with it. We will have to meet it anl conquer it.
Wishing for more water will not pot result
unless the wish is couj.led with a line of action in
which the city as a whole joins. The fact that
the City Commission has declined to grant an in-
crease of rates to the City Light & Water Com-
pany means at least two things : The Cornmifsion
4 believes that the people are paying all they can
really afford to pay at this time and the Cit
Light & Water Company has stated that it must
have an increase of rates in order to continue to
increase the water supply intimating that ir the
absence of the former the latter can not la ac-
complished. This variance of opinion letveen the Cimrrtis-
. kn and the City Light & Water Company is fur-
ther proof of one foct that Amarillo has a water
shortage. With a growing population with an
. increasing demand for water for domestic con-
sumption with manufacturing enterprise lialrin-'
between a desire to locate here and the prospect
of no water for their uses Amarillo citizens may
no longer dodge this issue.
If Amarillo is to maintain her supremacy she j
- must get into the task of supplying water. Ii rot I
she may lag until her lead is assumed by some oth-
er city in the Thins of Texas. No. this is not
idle dream but a reality in which all are interr-
ed. Let's put it over.
o
OUR AMERICAN LEGION.
At the time of the initial organization when
Statements were made predicting the nation-wide
power of the American Legion thousands of the
former-men-at-arms were inclined to look on the
forecast with lightness. Dut the succeeding
months hare demonstrated the wisdom of thr
statements and from every section of the United
States come added evidences of the grow ing pow-
er of the Legion.
Tried in the fires of the hell of war tested in
the crucible of extreme suffering privations and
hardships daring to cast their all upon the death-
less altar of service to their own fellow country-
;i men and the inhabitants of the civilized world
.! the Legionnaires have proven themselves in erery
way fitted as citizens of the greatest country of
earth able not only to goven their own actions
but capable of lending aid in the government of
society as a whole.
Already the politic parties of the Nation the
various states and municipalities are taking duo
cognizance of the Legion. Those who offer for
places of leadership want to know the wishes of
the Legion before announcing their platforms of
the great world war. None may gainay the fact
that patriotic Americans constituting the forces in
the lines back of the lines on this side of Xhi
Atlantic rendered great service but at the same
time there is no division of honors with the
"boys who offered their all. and those who made
the supreme sacrifice.
In the light of this recognized superior serv-
ice at the hands of the Legionnaies and those eli-
gible to membership in the American Legion.
the weight of this organization
licies of the country in every suMivision of
government is not at all a thing over which to
marvel.

of the ballot and now it is up to them to demon
strate their desire to exercise this privilege and
thus exert an influence in matters of government
in the communities in which they live.
" The opponents of suffrage for women hare as
