Tlx jury wan given tlie rase at j:v . m. and returned to the
court room forty minutes later. I!. I'. (.'. LuiKliridje "j year old
foreman said only one dallot was taken a secret one confirmed
liy a rising vote.
C lara Hamuli oMained tlie information fully 'seven minutes !
fore tlie verdict was rendered in open court aid sat surrounded lv
ntenmers of her family half smiling half afraid to helirve the nods
of assurance that were hent toward her.
When Judge Thomas W. lliampion mounted the bench and
received an affirmative resjMinse to his question: "(ientlemen have
vou reached a verdict?" her eves followed intentlv the motions of
the Itailiff as he received the verdict front Mr. Liughridge. walked
across the court room ami handed it to the clerk who read it in a '
nervous falsetto voice.
Clara llamon gasped audibly in the tensely silent court room:
damped forward in her seat .only to be seized front behind by her
younger brother "Jimmie" squeezed violently and kissed on the
left cheek. Tears came to her eyes and the other members of the
family cried with her as she crossed to the standing jurors who had
passed judgment on her and halteringly thanked them for their
verdict.
She came to the press room to thank the newspaper workers
hanging on the arms of shcriff.P.uck (iarrett and her brother and
with tears streaming down her face said:
"l am the happiest woman in the world."
She used n secret passage from the court room to escape the
crowds which threatened to overwhelm her and went to a lower
floor of the county building wlu-re she sat for some time receiving
congratulations.

EL PASO Texaa March II Th. United States immigration
officials and aoldiert of the border patrol engaged in long battle
tonight with Mexican at point on the Rio Grande near here.
Two aoldiert have been wounded and bullet grated tht head of
one of the immigration officials.
The battle waa still going on at 1 2 :4S a. m.
The immigration officers accounted for the lull on the theory
that the Mexicans had exhausted their ammunition and visited
Jauret to obtain a new supply.
At One a. m. only an occasional shot was exchanged A dim
light could be seen moving about on the Mexican side. The troops
and immigration men will remain on the scene until day break in
the hope of discovering the purpose of the Mexicans.
C A. Perkins inspector in charge of immigration men advanced
the theory the Mexicans had valuable cache of liquor or drugs in
the river and their fire was for the purpose of protecting against
seiture and in the hope the American would be driven off so it
might be recovered.
