8TRAY TOPICS FROM LITTLE
OLD NEW YORK.
New York. Aug. 15. Although It Is
Mill Htraw hat time and the crowds
ure sweltering along the Great White
Way the theatrical world U beginning
lo whirl again In preparation for the
I'Utimin business. In fad the firs!
of the productions Intended for fall
attract Ions nt the Broadway theater
have made their nppeuranee and the
melodrama houses tilling Third and
Kight avenues have begun to open. To
be mire these hot nights the roof-
gardens are extremely popular but
there Is always a theater hungry
crowd In New York that will endure
the heat In a stuffy theater If the show
Itself Is attractive. Several of the
vaudeville houses are offering new
"Salome" dunces and each one Is at
ttniptlng to create just a bit more of
a sensation that the other. Just how
long the Salome craze will last Is a
matter of great speculation but It Is
probable that lis the days get cooler
the vice HQiiad under the strenuous
leadership of Anthony Coinstaek will
become more vigilant and many of
the sensational dancers will either
have to modify their performances or
abandon the dauce alot pother.
The desire to keep cool forces peo
ple to adopt all kinds of expedients
In New York but the latest has been
Invented by some young ladles who
are a little more unconventional and
daring than the majority of their sis-
ters. They have a name loo for this
latest cooling devlee which Is noth-
ing more than going barefooted but
they call It "going lure toes." It Is
finite a fad among a certain class of
young ladles to soothe their nerves
these sweltering days by bringing
i heir bare feet In contact with mother
earth or at least the cool grass. They
gem-rally go to Central Park where
they seek a bench that Is easy to tarn
around so thjit their lacks will be to-
ward the walk. The wisest trick is
to kick off the pumps and sluiffl- off
the short stockings. Tiny then wrap

FADS AND FASHIONS.
New York Aug. 13. The pongee!
dust coat Is losing the fuvor of the mo
torlsts and In Its place we have the
smart mohair ami serge coats which
are bv far more serviceable ami In
inanv wavs more attractive. It has
been found that the pongee coat dot-
not keep Its fresh appearance on
long tour but looks sadly rumpled an
shapeless when the destination Is
readied this especially if the coat
has ever been laundered. The heavy
pongees of the Rajah make and the
French tussore are liked by some but
these have disadvantages. The rough
surface of llajah shows the soli very
quickly niiil the tussore in a good
heavy quality is always expensive. So
It seems that mohair Is the best all
round material for a motor coat. It
can be found In a large range of col-
ors; it keeps its shape ami trluiuess
sheds the dust and Is Just the right
weight. Many of these coats are strict
ly tailored and of the Raglan cut. The
collar may be fastened up ( lose to the
throat and the only trimming Is rows
of sltching with perhaps ntrupping
and buttons. A good practical hat for
motoring is a Panama or rough straw
trimmed villi a scarf which matches
the color of the coat. The veil Is not
necessarily of the same color but list
any that becomes the wearer and
looks well with the cout. C.enera'lv tin
darker shades of blue green and
brown are chosen leaving the pal-t
tints for short pleasure trips. If such
he taken; but white In a wash gauze
is always popular.
Murdered materials are holding their
f:ior in the feminine field and (he
borders are being used as trimmings
on gowns. The new foulards lire es-

means of Increasing the cost and stick
iiiK the passengers. One of the tricks
that is worked is for the chaffetir lo
take the baggage up on the seat with
him for which there is a charge of
L'O cents for each separnle piece. An-
other taxicab trick Is the placing of
the registering Instrument on one of
the back wheels of the machine In
stead of one one of the front wheels.
When sinrtlng up the machine on a
wet pavement sometimes one of the
rear wheels will spin around f:isl
enough to register almost a mile be-
fore the machine has moved a foot.
The "cabby." with his dilapidated cab
and over-worked horse had many
tricks but from present Indications
he will have to devise some more If
lie Is to keep pace with his taxlcab
rival.
These are troublesome days for an
tomobillsts In Manhattan who like to
drive their machines through the
shaded roads in Central Park. A new
law recently passed forbids the own
ers of sinokey leaky and ill-smelling
mat bines from using the park's high-
was and this togelher with the old
law against over-speeding has appar
ently removed for many the last In
centive to automobile.
The fashionable Hotel Wolcott has
endeared Itself to childless mothers by
announcing that it has a sumptuously
lilted up dog room so that they can
go to sleep witn tne comfort ing
thought that their pet Ki.los are sleep
ing under the same roof with them and
nre being carefully watched over by a
French maid. Heretofore the fash
ionable hostleries have not permitted
pels of any kind to be brought into
the hotetls until the Wolcott devised
this means of preventing the tearful
separations of a mistress and pet. Dog
biscuits are to be provided bv the
management and cushioned wicker
baskets nre supplied. The clog room
Is In charge of nn attendant who is
continually on the job and a veterin

nearly every well dressed woman. Just

attention. At first one does not realize
how much money can be spent on
them for they must be artistic and

or some rich design of modern work
On certain hats the pins are chosen
Just alike but oftener they are nil
different. One hat noticed recently

of Roman mosaic a pale yellow and
white cameo set in an old copper rim
and a very large round darkened ball
of carved ivory. That there Is a craze
for old bits of Jewelry Is very evident
and fully as much time is spent on se
lectlng these pins as on the hats in
which they are worn.
Among the combinations of different
materials this year are cloth and tus
sore and tussore and voile. These are
seen very frequently In the packet and
skirt suits. The grosgraln tussore Is
used mostly because the surface Is
much smoother than the heavy rough
variety. Then in the linens the plain
colors nre combined with checks nn l
stripes. The most fatshionnble colon
in linen are ochre leather color dark
prune old blue and bottle green.
There Is a material which was new
