The National Democratic assumes
The National Democratic committee
assumes that Texas Is In the Demo-
cratic column good and strong and de-
duces from this postulate the corrolla-
ry that Texas is the one state to make
the most liberal contribution to the Na-
tional Democratic campaign fund. The
National committee expects great
things of Texas and In order that this
reasonable expectation may not be
disappointed every Democrat should
do his duty and do it now. Each con-
tributor to the good of the cause will
get a receipt direct from the national
committee so that he may know that
the money goes to the purpose for
which he contributed it.

legislature the Democrats offered a
measure to Btop gambling in Wall

for congress from the Seventh Iowa
district on an independent ticket

SUGAR PRODUCTION IN TEXAS
First Year's Operations Show Satis-
factory Returnc More Planta-
tion to Be Purchased.
San Antonio Texas. Sept. 1. Last
year the State of Texas embarked In
he sugar business on a large scab'
and the results of the first year's op-
erations show a most eiK-ouraalnn re-
turn upon the Investment and Justify
the wisdom of the uudertaklm:. I'"-
usually heavy imps were realized on
tho vmioiu plantation ami the re-
port of W. 11. GUI. chairman of th''
Stnte Penitentiary Board shows that
the Income so dethed will .uo far to-
ward wiping out the debt incillT.
In the purchase of these proporlie.i.
The State purc hased UA'M m res of
siw.r land consisting of the Chenan-
go plantation with 7.7'2 acres the
Kills plantation of 5.fi4 acres and
the Rlddick place with 1000 acres. An
option was held on tho big Cunning-
ham place of 1:1.000 acres but because
of a disagreement In price this ileal
fell through.
These plantations were worked by
convict labor and have been so skill-
fully conducted as to prove an unqual-
ified success. It Is probable that the
pmltentlary board will be in the mar-
ket this winter for more sugar land
as this use of the convicts seems to
occasion less friction and yield better
profits. Texas has. however a num-
ber of Independent sugar plantations
and all of them are realizing great
profits. At the present rate of grow th
of this industry. In a few years tho
sugar trust will have to reckon with
Texas for control of the markets
A Bryan man who visited Texas
during the patt summer told his
friends In that State that there were
just enough Republicans in Texas to
hold the federal offices and that the
officeholders' tniBt did not want any
competition. But the report is now
current that word has been received
from Oyster Bay that a sham battle
will not be tolerated this year. The
national party managers anticipating
losses in tho North will endeavor to
recoup themselves by capturing a
couple of congressional districts In
Texas those now represented by
Slayden and Garner. A similar effort
will be made In other Southern States.
