The editor states that his re-

continued.
Apropos the drink question the
Clipping's reporter lias this to
say :
"They have a concoction here
they cull cognac (pronounced
kolineach) 'made by mixing
eiiiiil parts of wood alcohol kero-
sene and rain water. Recipe tor
taking: Make your will take
three lingers of above mixture
after shaking and don't kick
when the colonel gives you twen
ly days. You get so bad you will
take 'money out of your khaki
pants and switch it to your blue
ones and all the time you think
you are robbing somebody."
From the news columns of the
Clippings it appears that .the
command is in excellent health
and that the surgeon says this is
dm; largely to the fact that the
hoys are lighting shy of cognac
and bad wine and to keeping their
feet warm and their heads cool.

fjundon The with birthday of
John Kuskin the great writer and
art critic drew many of his
friends to Brantwood his homo
last Wednesday and the anniver-
sary was quietly celebrated. Mr.
Kuskin's mind began tc fail about
two years and a half ago ami he
has' lilso become quite f ;eble in
body. He spends a great part of
his time however in pedestrian
oxercise and while he is abroad
thus engaged he is apt tu be al
most garrulous.
Recently o'l such an occasion
ho burst out into allowed' elo-
quence which wis simply 'i ton-
ishing and reminded the friend
who was with him of his best
days His language was vigor-
ous and beautiful.
Usually however the litent-
teur is very silent and is only
roused to speech by some chance
word which may recall a deep im-
pression of the past. He will sit
for hours however and listen to
sympathetic discourse upon top-
ics that he loves. Such fur in-
stance was the case recently
when a visitor who is an enthusi-
astic Alpine climber talked to
hiiii about his favorite mountains.
He was particularly interested to
hear about the Alpine guides
sturdy and picturesque men whom
he has always admired. P.rant-
vvood John Kuskin's home is on
Coniston lake in Westmoreland
the famous "lake country"
which was consecrated in litera-
ture by the residence there of
Wordsworth and others of the
wonderful school of poets which
illustrated the earlv vcars of the
century. Kuskin's family ante
cedents however were ol a pro
saic sort.
