Dishoj) Turner's Sermons.
Athens (ia. April 30. JJishoii
Henry M. Turner preached today at
Bethel African Methodist Episco-
pal church and lo the whito people
at the court house. Tho sermon lo
the negroes urged thorn to conduct
themselves aright aud to teach their
children to observe the law aud
religion. Ho said tho newspapers
of Georgia had done the negro
preachers a great injustice by say-
ing they were not preaching to their
congregations against the crimes ol
murder rape and arson lie said
the ministers did preach against
such crimes; he al vayu did and
that tho newspapers as a rule
knew as much about what the negro
preachers were saying as a gang of
monkeys for they did not in many
instances have reporters at churches
to report the sermons.
During bis address to the white
people Bishop Turner said he would
rather his people were again in
slavery with tho protection it of
forded than 111 their present condi
tion. He said the ucL't'o was
brought here and given civilization
in order that he might go to Africa
and civilize thoso peojilo. It was
his opinion that the great question
would never be settled until the
negro olx-yed God'H manifest will
aud returned to Africa.
Bishop Turner is the lending fig
ure in the Afrienn Methodist Kpis
copul church South. He is much
reHjK-ctnl by the whiles and revered
by Ihe negroes. He is a Ihiity
