CANYON CITY RANDALL CO. TEXAS FRIDAY. MAY 25 1906.

Commencement.
Friday afternoon the crown-
ing event of the week came off
the graduating exercises. The
school hall was beautifully dec-
orated with the class colors
class motto and fragrant
flower's.
The program was well pre-
pared and every number ren-
dered to the pleasure and profit
of all present. The music bot'i
instrumental and vocal- was
pronounced of a high grade.
As the Board of Education re-
quired one more grade for grad-
uation the class this year was
small. Nevertheless the com
mencement exercises were in-
teresting and inspiring. The
crowded hall proved the in-
terest of our citizens in their
school. Canyon City has rea-
sons to be proud of her schools;
for they are abreast with the
times in all their lines of work.
Here every boy and girl who
puts forth the effort can be well
prepared for life's duties.
The next feature of commence-
ment was the lecture on the
"Model Citizen" by Rev. J.
"VViuford Hunt the proceeds of
which were to defray the ex-
penses of commencement.
A fair audience greeted Mr.
Hunt. By all present the lec-
ture was pronounced tine be
yond expectations. It was high-
ly educational with a vein of
humor running through the
whole lecture. He is certainly
entertaining in his language and
in his manner. uur peupic
need educating along the line
of good lectures. Any kind of
a show at any price irets a
good crowd; but a lecture
which is inspiring and elevat-
ing often fails to get the
proper support.
More Railroad Talk.
A special of very recent date
to the Fort Worth Record says:
"Agents representing the
Santa Fe railroad have been in
the territory northwest of
Brownwood for several days
Other maneuvers give rise to
the belief that the Santa Fe cut-
off will be built witlrn the next
tight months. "
The Hesperian of Floydada
gives an account of a railroad
meeting held in that town in
which H. T. McGee in behalf of
his road the Santa Fe makes a
proposition to bring the Texico
cut-off by there.

School Vacation.
With the awarding of-promo-tion
cards Monday there closed
one of the most successful ses-
sions in the history of the Can
yon City High School. The News
feels safe in saying this because
not a syllable of complaint has
come to the ears of its editor.
The board of trustees has been
progressive and yret conserva
tive while the faculty from prin-
cipal down all along the line
seems to have given complete
satisfaction to both patrons and
students. The News does not
want to be understood assaying
there has been no friction what-
ever possibly there has been
some little hitch there always
is in the best regulated institu-
tions you can't please every-
body try as you will but that in
substance it has amounted to so
little as to cause no perceptible
ripple on the public conscience.
This is a line record and should
be highly gratifying not only
to trustee and teacher but to
every citizen who has the well
being of Canyon City at heart.
The News is proud of the Can
yon City Public School and so
also if outward expressions
count are the big majority of
our citizens.

agents did not come into Brown-

with the possible exception of a
very few tracts the right of
way has been secured all along
from Abilene to within seven
miles of Brownwood. The mat-
ter of securing the right of way-
was so quietly transacted that
nothing was known cf it until
parties from the country came
in and reported the matter.

News From the South.
W. P. Heller and John Knight
returned from their trip South
on the 17th. While gone they
visited in a leisurely manner
Tulia Lockney Floydada Em-
ma Lubbock Brownrield. Go-
mez and a number of other
points.
They discovered our old friend
Quitman Robinson nicely lo-
cated and well pleased in the
northwest corner of Lynn Coun-
ty; visited Bill Luna's new
quarters and also several other
old acquaintances. John Knight
says that Q. Robinson can dou-
ble his money already on his
new purchase if he wants to
and that land all over the coun-
try of their travel is climbing
up in price as well as here.
They made an investment
while gone buying four sections
on the Sulphur Draw in Terry-
County of $1.50 State land for
which they paid 82.50 bonus.
Both Mr. Heller and John
Knight are not only old-timers
but close observers and excel-
lent judges of West Texas dirt
and while they saw lots of good
country oa this tour they
give it as their opinion that for
agricultural purposes Randall
County if any difference is a
little better than any territory
they traveled over. Mr. Knight's
only exception to this statement
is in favor of the shin oaks in
Terry and other counties for
hogs on the range and the sandy
soils of the lower Plains being
more favorable than this county
'or cotton.

Carroll of Waco will be here Sun-
Jay and will do the preaching

Dr. Carroll in pulpit abitity has
few equals; so you will miss much
if you do not hear each one of his
discourses.
