outgoing editor of i
It is to them in
lhat he owes the ;
present splendid equipment
of the office the tine list of
subscribers to the paper and its
other substantial business ar-
rangements. And in severing
his connection with The News
as its editor the writer feels
much as does the pastor of a
church who after six years of
faithful preaching to an appre-
ciative congregation must cut
the bands of thought which com-
mon interests and time have wel-
ded into a chain of mutual esteem
and love. Digressing a little
right here for the sake of the
moral lesson therein taught the
writer will say that had half of
the kind words been spoken to
him of his efforts with The News
prior tt its sale as since then
no change would have been here
recorded. Such however is
human life the harsh things
more often come to the surface
while the good the part that
really makes life worth the liv-
ing is frequently hidden until
tot late.
Hut while leaving the editorial
tripod of The News and going
back to his first love the law
the writer assures News patrons
and especially those subscribers
hundreds of them with whom
he has held regular weekly com-
munion on current topics for
several years that he will never
forget their kindness to him and
will at all times remember them
both old and young as among
his best friends.
As a last word to our friends
and tt the friends and well wish-
ers of The Canyon City News
generally we desire to say that
the new owner of the pin
worthv of their confidence
t is
is a
! man and that as an editor he is
capable tif giving them and no
doubt will give them a much
j better paier than I have done.
And so with the firm belief that
the change of ownership is for
the better all round I lay down
not without some heartburning
and regret the editorial eneil

which has kept me in weekly

OUR NEWSPAPER FRIENDS.
Our newspaper friends all over
Texas have had much to say and
all in a kindly spirit about our
retirement from the newspaper
ob-1 field. Some accuse us of get-
or king rich and of desiring to end
our days in "purple and lino
linen." A few hint that there is
something in the newspaper
line in sight bigger than Canyon
City can promise. Still others
land they are in the majority say
j that no matter what's up now
"Hrandon will back in the
newspaper business in less than
six months." All however
sieak well of our efforts along
journalistic lines in the past; our
faults tho manv. have; been over-!
the c raft are too jorsonal. We
appreciate the spirit underlaying
what you say but the words
themselves well a proper mod
osty forbids our rcicnting them.
Again th colu ins of this num-
ber of The News wouldn't suf
lice for them and so as the most
valued gist of all said eliminat-
ing entirely that which is per-1
sonal to Hrandon himself we
quote our esteemed nabor the
Hereford Hrand as follows:
(ieo. A Hrandon has sold the
Canyon City News to an Iowa
newspaper man who will take
charge Aug. 1". The News has
always been a fair and honest
newspaper; there has been little
"hot air" in its columns; its ed-
itorial utterances have been cast
upon a high plane. The News
is one of the first papers that
comes to the exchange table of
The Hrand to be opened and
read. May the blessings of the
accumulated years fall easily up-
on the head of the retiring editor.
We are vain Hro. Elliot all
mortals are in some degree not
excepting your own excellent
self but we cannot screw our
courage up to publish all you say
of us it's too good to be true
and so with m st of what the
others say.
To his newspaper friends the
outgoing editor of The News
owes most of the best that is in
him and whenever ami wherever
opportunity offers he will be
found ready to return as far as
in him lays measure for meas-
ure and more.
